Mother Nature has been very upset this week and it looks like she isn't finished. As I watched the news this morning specifically the weather reports about Hurricane Irene I thought to myself, am I prepared? The answer is no, not really. I have some matches and a functioning flashlight but, that's about it.
The Washington, DC area is expecting very high winds and possible flooding due to Irene. I went to the Red Cross website to find out what they recommend.
· Make sure your gas tank is full before the storms hits
· Turn off propane tanks and small appliances
· Have enough water and food for 3 days
· Extra batteries – make sure they are still good
· Cell phone with charger
· Battery operated radio
· Extra supplies for your pet (if you have pets)
· First Aid kit
· Cash
· Tools/Supplies for securing your home
These are just a few items that are important and depending on where you are located there might be more to prepare for. An evacuation plan could be deemed necessary so that everyone in your household knows what to do. Most importantly plan ahead and stay informed with the storm track so that you’re prepared for what Hurricane Irene could deliver.
