If you’re considering moving to Calgary, this is the first of a series of blog postings to help you get to know the area.  I wanted to give you some information to give you an idea of just how big the city is, and the many opportunities available to suit your lifestyle…

One of the first things you’ll need to know when getting around Calgary, is that it’s divided into 4 quadrants: North West, North East, South West, and South East.  Having this knowledge to begin with, will save you a lot of hassle, especially when you’re searching for an address like 200 - 2nd Avenue.  There could, quite literally be 4 locations with this address.  So the quadrant designation such as 200 - 2nd Avenue SW is very important.

The Great Divide...

The street that divides the East from the West in Calgary is Centre Street.  Memorial Drive is the main road that divides the North from the South.  These dividing streets don’t necessarily continue on in straight grid-like lines throughout the entire city, in fact in some parts of town, they don't continue at all, so at times, determining whether you’re in the North or South, or East or West can be tricky.

North or South?

Whether you choose to live in the North or the South, for many, is quite a distinction.  The sheer land area that Calgary has expanded over can make living on one side or the other, as vastly different as living in different cities all together.  For example, I live in, what I like to call, “The Deep South.”  When I show homes to my clients in Tuscany, my round trip can sometimes be as much as 100 kilometres, depending on how many properties we view.

There are over 240 communities in Calgary, and it’s still growing.  The first part of this blog series is intended to help you get an idea of the residential communities in the four main quadrants, as well as the more central neighborhoods deemed to be “Inner City.”
