My Clients Called .........You want me to do WHAT?

Last fall I had a couple from California that built a new home with me as their buying agent. It would be December when the home was complete and they would make their move to Albuquerque.   We playfully bantered back and forth via emails and phone calls that my wife and I would help them move in when the time came.

Albuquerque Moving TruckThe long distance home construction and closing went smoothly.  At 10:00 on a Friday night I get a call from my happy home-buyers they were about 30 minutes away from their new home.  I’m thinking they want me to meet them at their dream home and give them the keys.  Well I had it partly right.

It turns out Mr. Buyer had the flu complete Client with Feverwith temperature and chills, Mrs. Buyer had driven the large moving truck the entire way and was exhausted.  Yes they wanted the keys but they also wanted help moving in THAT NIGHT.  At first I laughed then realized they were serious, You want me to do what?  They actually wanted the truck completely unloaded so they could return it to the rental company at first light the next day.

Now keep in mind it’s December.  Of course on this particular Albuquerque night it was really cold, gusty winds and even sleet now and then.  After some muttering my wife and I got our coats, gloves and ear warmers and jumped in taking off the Realtor cap and putting on the movers’ toboggan so to speak.

Man Moving BoxesAfter a quick exchange of greetings all four of us kicked into full moving mode.  Thankfully they had marked everything well so we hustled each box and heavy piece of furniture to Moving Boxesthe proper room.  We didn’t slow down; there were no breaks, it was cold, they were sick and tired and we all wanted to just get finished!  After a while it all became a blur but we got it all done in the wee hours of the morning and survived to tell the tale.

If there ever was a time when we have gone above and beyond the call of duty I must say this story has to be at the top of the list.  Paying it forward has paid off in more ways than one and we’re actually good friends with our referral happy clients.

We would love to earn your business at Albuquerque Homes Realty but we won't be able to personally help you move.  I bet we can help you find some good professionals.

John, I know I would have done the same thing had I been in your shoes that night. You gain a good friend, and I know the referrals are coming soon. You certainly earned the Medal for Excellent Service that night.

As many have, my wife and I did that once with a guy. Working fast (as a musician, i've loaded & unloaded full trucks hundreds of times and know how to do it quickly and efficiently). Boxes were NOT labeled and organized, but did the best that we could.

Going good til a bed end fell over onto the driveway and he got mad (put a coupla small scratches on it, I assume, already well worn). HE put it there & HE was the one who bounced the truck that made it fall. Needless to say, HE finished most of the work as "suddenly" Old Age caught up with Sue and me and we jess got slooowerrrr and sloooooowerrrrrrrrrrr. HE didn't even bother to say THANK YOU to us when we had finished.

I'm sure your Wife will tell you that Southern Hospitality only goes so far!!!

John, congrats to you and Debbie for going above and beyond!!  I did a similar thing a couple of years ago, but my people who got in late around 10 pm or so from California sent me home taking pity on me after about half the truck was unloaded...I don't think they could have done much more anyway.  You guys are great!

You and Debbie certainly went above and beyond wearing your Realtor hat. Kudos to you both for lending a helping hand. We actually did something similar. It wasn't late at night, but it was freezing outside...we helped siblings in an Estate sale move-out their parents belongings...

No, Guys,  John is not the "better man"  nor to be commended for "going above and beyond..".  What John did was to teach yet another client that

Realtors have no lives and are here for them 24/7.  These people knew that they would have a very long drive and should have made their own

arrangements for arrival in town.  A good night's sleep would have been better for all. There is no question that they so took advantage of John.

The sad part is that he let them.  Are we as agents so terrified that clients will go somewhere else that we do not set boundries?  People would not

call  other professions after hours or on Christmas Eve, but they have no compunctions calling us.  Why?  Because we let them. I guess we are not

considered professionals. In our office, we have business hours.  Our clients know them and respect them and us for setting them. Very, very rarely is there an issue that cannot wait until business hours of the next morning.  Find your backbones somewhere in that mass of jelly and set boundries.  Act like professionals and you will be treated so.  Your lives and perhaps your marriages will be the better for it.

Hello all and a big thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to check out our post and leave a comment.  Debbie and I have read each one and both truly appreciate you!

These good folks have become friends and Debbie and I have enjoyed many good social times with them since their move.  With that said we won’t be doing any hands on moving with their next move.  I don’t see us helping anyone with a hands on move again.  Been there done that :)

The Albuquerque and Rio Rancho NM real estate market is hot at this time and keeping us very busy.  Thankful and blessed!  With this said, I am leaving comments on as many of your post as possible but it may be a while till I get everyone responded to.  I'm sure you can relate and understand.

Again thanks and I hope you each are enjoying a great and productive weekend in and out of real estate.

Adrienne  No one is going to attack you for your position and beliefs about our profession.  All of us respect each other and share our lives with others as we have become 'family'.  No one is going to criticize you for who you are or what you do.  We look forward to your stories and experiences you care to share with us.

My next door neighbor fell one evening around 11:00pm and called 911.  The dispatcher called the doctor...who lived across the alley from the neighbor.  The doctor called her and asked her to meet him in the alley...11:30 at night.  He examined her wrist and whatever became of the rest of the story is unknown to me.  He could have instructed the dispatcher to call someone to open the clinic for them and he could have put on his lab coat.  That would have been the professional thing to do!

Sometimes we get taken advantage of in life...just ask me about our kids!  Does that make John unprofessional?  Not a chance.  He shared a good story with us and we have commented on his adventure.

We look forward to you sharing your expertise, knowledge and experience with us.  Till then, welcome to Active Rain!

What a story!  Just looking over the last few comments it occurs to me that I likely couldn't add anything that hasn't already been said.  I still want to commend you for doing the "right thing" as I bet many would not have.

John Johnston, I am not sure why you thought the doctor's neighborly call was analogous to this story.   The doctor was a NEIGHBOR not someone whom the agent had been acquainted, most likely, less than three months.  If you read my blog, I did not say that John was unprofessional.  What I was trying to point out that, as RE practitioners, we do not engender respect from the public (glaringly evidenced by this story) and urging those practitioners to find their spines.

Adrienne  This should probably be offline as this is John Q's blog.  Lawyers, real estate agents, used car salesman, politicians, government, big business...the public image is what it is.  I personally know John Q and many others you will meet on Active Rain have earned (that's another blog whether or not respect is earned or given) the respect of their peers and clients.  The fact one client took advantage of John and he allowed them to only made for a good story...and a lesson learned.

I think the fact most agents work for commission is a bigger handicap to our level of respect than John's story.  Now, for us to charge for our time...now that is getting a spine!

We do look forward to your blogs sharing your knowledge, experience and expertise with us.  Thank you for sharing your thoughts and enjoy the day!

John, in spite of some of the other comments, you did the "right" thing!  You kept your word, even if it was only "half-heartedly" offered.  You have a new friend and a definite referral client!

Way to go above and beyond the call of duy John. You will now have that couples business for life and all the referrals they can muster for you as well, simply because you showed them they meant more to you than just that single transaction. Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like a fun evening John, I always offer my two sons to help people move in.  Generally they dont ask for help but a few times they have utilized our garage full of leftover furniture that previous tenants seem to keep leaving behind.
