Sunset Beach, NC Hurricane Irene Update

Hurricane Warning is effective for the Sunset Beach area. Beginning at 8:30 am, Friday morning a voluntary evacuation will be ordered for anyone in mobile and manufactured homes or living in low lying areas prone to flooding. West Brunswick High School on Highway 130 in Shallotte will serve as a shelter and will open at 2:00 pm, Friday. This shelter will be pet-friendly.

An Emergency Meeting of the Sunset Beach Town Council will be held on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 10:00 am in the Town Hall Council Chambers to discuss a mandatory evacuation of the island due to the possibility of the bridge closing. This is a result of recent changes in the national weather forecast.

The next update from Brunswick County Emergency Services is expected by 12:00 noon on Friday, August 26th.

All residents and visitors in the Sunset Beach area are encouraged to continue emergency preparedness by checking and updating emergency supply kits and evacuation plans and by obtaining Hurricane Re-Entry Passes from Town Hall. Please be advised that once an Evacuation Order is issued Hurricane Re-Entry Passes can no longer be issued. If an evacuation order is issued, please secure your property and leave the area as soon as possible.

Emergency information is available on the Brunswick County Emergency Services website at www.brunswickes.com.

Those with special medical or physical needs are encouraged to register with the County’s Special Needs Registry by clicking on the upper right hand corner of the County Emergency Services website.

The Town website www.sunsetbeachnc.gov also offers emergency preparedness information under the Information and FAQ tab.

For weather updates concerning Hurricane Irene, please stay turned to the local media; local media will also be utilized for announcements concerning shelter locations if necessary.

Frank and Karen,

This is a helpful post for area residents watching for Hurricane updates.  I hope Irene stays in the Atlantic and does no damage.

I've been thinking about you guys, well, not so much Frank, but you Karen!!!

Kidding aside, I truly hope that Irene is more bark than bite for you and everyone on the eastern seaboard.
