Restaurant Review: Upper Crust Trattoria in San Luis Obispo, California

Upper Crust Trattoria is my favorite SLO restaurant!

I've been a fan of Upper Crust Pizza since they first opened in a little shop on Foothill blvd. near Cal Poly.  The Tynis had a vision of a modern California cuisine meets Italian-Mediterranian and they built their current restaurant from the ground up.  It's so beautiful inside that it reminds you of a Italian street market with their display of fresh daily home-made desserts (that you simply can't resist), the indoor fireplace, the garden patio seating with water fountain, and canopy eaves to separate seating areas.  Also a nice pull-up bar area to enjoy the wonderful new "chef's special" menu items that rotate every day.

The service is ALWAYS top notch, the bread is baked fresh daily and they have olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the tables, which they'll pour into a little plate.  Take a piece of bread and rub it in the oil and vinegar, it's so delicious you'll be tempted to fill up on bread before you order arrives!

Their Raspberry Salad is certainly a San Luis Obispo favorite for a reason.  I order it nearly every time I'm at Upper Crust!  Fresh mixed greens, apple slices, glazed walnuts, and chunks of bleu cheese, served with their famous raspberry dressing.  I haven't gotten past much of the menu, although I often split a small gourmet pizza with a friend.  (Could not find salad dressing this great at the grocery story and I've tried, but failed, to replicate this salad dressing recipe at home.)

My husband one time ordered Grilled Chicken Calzone (Stuffed with grilled chicken, ricotta, mozzarella, goat cheese, artichoke hearts, and fresh tomatoes. Served with house marinara) and enjoyed it immensely.  So did everyone else in our party, because it was too big for 1 person!

This review would not be complete without mention of the desserts.  Of course there is Tiramisu and Créme Brulée made in-house daily.  They are excellent, which is to be expected.  But the challenge is that the dessert bar has a different selection of yummy, scrumptious delicacies every time you visit Upper Crust.  My advice:  make sure you eat your meal first, or you'll be tempted to try 5 different desserts and you'll be too full before your meal...

Enjoy this wonderful adventure of the SLO life which represents all the character, culture, and charm of San Luis Obispo.
