If Honesty Is The Best Policy, Why Are You Trying To Trick Us?

Honest AbeIf Honesty Is The Best Policy, Why Are You Trying To Trick Us?

"Honesty is the best policy".

Seems like a simple enough concept, yet we see evidence routinely that some people struggle with making that their daily practice.

Now I don't know about you, but any business or person that starts off with a deception is HIGHLY unlikely to ever get the opportunity to gain our business or our friendship.  The proper foundation for a relationship is trust.

Real estate agents get inundated with people/companies all "here to help".  We get that, really we do!  We and our peers across the country cumulatively spend millions and millions to do our jobs to the best of our abilities for our clients.  So what do the companies see when they see an agent's name, address and phone number?  Fertile ground for business!

And if we're approached properly and honestly, that business will at least be given consideration.  There needs to be a STRONG value add proposition though if you're going to get us to part with our dollars.

On the other hand if you approach us by NOT identifying yourself or what you're about, then don't expect a warm welcome from us.  That urgent "Please call me" voice message (by the way, familiar with the Do Not Call Registry??) and an email right after with no indication of what you're about, but with a "Please call me at your earliest convenience!" and your phone number?  Again, perhaps you're hoping we'll think you're a potential out of state home buyer?

Sorry, but a quick Google search of your phone number and we can find you.  And once we find you and know what you're REALLY about?  Let's just say for a "social media expert", you just demonstrated you don't know much about people.  Your business is now on our personal DO NOT CALL Registry.

When we're looking to establish a relationship with a potential Warren County home buyer or seller, you're ONLY going to get honesty from us!  We don't hide who we are or what we're about.

For the seller, the price we expect to get from a home, the things you need to do to maximize your home's chances of sale. And depending on conditions and needs, we may even be telling you now is NOT a good time for you to go on the market.

For the buyer, you get our honest opinions about the pros and cons of a home & community you're thinking about.  Is that "great deal" today going to be an albatross when it's YOUR turn to sell years from now?

Maybe you've read enough of our posts or monthly newsletters to know about us.  What we're about, how we operate, enough for you to know that straight up is the only way we know to be.  But just in case you need that extra assurance, we're an Accredited business with the Cincinnati Better Business Bureau and have a profile on Angie's List too.  We're willing to stake our reputation on making you happy!

Oh I hate those calls!    they make it sound like it is urgent and they need your help   I am getting so that if it is an out of state or an unknown call I don't answer...if it is legitimate they will leave a message!

Bliz ~ Some people start talking so fast, never identify themselves, and it's a wonder how they can make it in the business world. Besides honesty, how about some phone etiquette with it ~

I just commented on a similarly themed post today. These calls and emails are so annoying. Check the Do Not Call registry, don't call me with an "unknown/ blocked" number, and above all, be honest in why you've called me.

Honesty IS the best policy, Liz and Bill.  It may not always be what the client wants to hear, but it is the best possible information give based on knowledge and black and white stats.

Bliz, great post as usual.  I find it funny that they think agents in this market will be willing to part with their money that easily - I do check all #s on Google.  Unfortunately for me I have several overseas clients and their ID shows as private or unknown so I have to take the calls.

BTW where are you hiding "Bad Miss Manners"?  We miss her :)  Have a good weekend.

As you know, I find this stuff so annoying too.  It's really annoying when you think you may have a lead and they are just soliciting. This happens to me often after trade shows...and it's right when I'm trying to call my legitimate leads - the ones htat asked me to call them.

Virginia, The longer we're in the business the less susceptible we are, and when in doubt, checking AR out for the opinions is a great way to go!

Stephen, Anyone that is going to deceive and lie isn't someone we want to work with.  The extra risk just isn't necessary.

Deborah, Same here.  If you just called back thinking you've got a new client potentially and it's just a solicitation ploy?  Not cool.....

Anita, Those shortcuts will lose our business every time.

Kristine, I feel the same way about email subject lines that start "RE:".  So you're trying to make me think you're replying to something we sent you????  Go away now.....

Karen & Frank, If they'd just be honest they'd be much better off with us.

Craig, Same feelings here.  Personally I prefer email spam over spam phone calls.  The email I MIGHT actually read.  Calling me when we're on the DNC tells me you don't know the law or don't care.  Either way, not good.

Juli, For our clients, it's the only way to go.  No smoke and mirrors.

Ellie, We can't dodge them all :)  And Miss Bad Manners comes out with special cause, just haven't had the right motivation.  She did make an appearance August 2nd, maybe you missed that one?

Debbie, Reading yours triggered the rest of the chain reaction this morning :)  Had an AR member do the email/phone tag thing without ever identifying.  We've heard about their company elsewhere, and it wasn't positive.  Pass.....

BLiz - OY VEY!!!  We all despise those so-called "gurus" who try and trick us into thinking we "need" them!  I actually have more repugnance for so-called "professionals" (Realtors/agents, MLO's, appraisers, etc...) who are taking advantage of consumers (buyers & sellers).

Donne, Neither group finds favor with us.  Practice ethically, or get out of the business.  Don't appreciate those that make ALL of us look bad due to their bad practices.

BLiz....I hate this stuff too.  Every once in a while a number comes up that I think looks familiar as a new client or something & I answer it....that happened to me just yesterday!

Christine, I'm more prone to answering than Liz, but I can probably ditch them more easily too :)  Always hoping it's an out of state client prospect and NOT someone else selling us something.  Starting to label the numbers in the phone contacts so the next time they call we'll know not to pick up!  Bill

HI BLiz,

Gee I thought this only happens to Canadians....;) I love those calls and emails, as I do tear a strip of them front to back, and side to side. it is great to release a little stress,

almost as good as calling "any customer service"  and being on hold for ever......... they love me (not)...

Peter & Linda, For too many companies, customer service is an oxymoron.  I dislike having to ever call any of those numbers, but sometimes it has to be done.....

I'm getting more and more of these calls every day.  If they really wanted to help, they would leave their name and phone number.  Waste of my time.

I just hate that we waste our cell minutes to have someone hawk goods at us that we don't want.  And I really hate the sneaky way of trying to entice us to make the call.  I'll bet that if we do, they'd use it to get around the DNC list to say we "initiated" the relationship.  But, I also Google it and then, I block the number so they cannot get through again.
