Will You Pretty Please Bring In that Lawn Chair... PLEASE read the scale below!

Please read the scale below & pass it forward to your neighbor & your neighbor's neighbor.  I don't know why I didn't post this prior.  I just dropped my jaw when I just heard a report on the weather channel of an area & what they have seen.  Now, I am not speaking to those in North Carolina.  I am praying for you...& that all is well.  Those in the Northeast you still have time to do the right thing!!  It is for you & because of you that I am posting this blog. (may be not you specifically, but may be your neighbor?)

I have to ask, has anyone had a softball hit them in the face at say 30-40 miles per hour?  I am not a great at baseball or softball averages, but I will pull that speed out of the top of my head as an example.

I bet it possibly brought stars &/or a big lump??!!  Has anyone had a rock hit their windshield going say 50-60 mph in their car??  It possibly cracked it??

Saffir Simpson Scale

I just heard, "there are people that still have all their furniture outside in the Northeast"??  Oh I wish this were not true.  This is what made me drop my jaw.  This is how it goes...You may think, Oh, it is just a Cat 1 it is nothing, I don't need to do that"...??  Okay, just what do you think can happen "if":

"if" - You or your neighbor decide to leave their lawn furniture outside??  Or your potted plants??  Can you imagine having a potted plant coming at your window or your head going even 74-115 mph??  Or a lawn chair at you or your window...??  Especially the one you didn't board up, or put shutters??  Who would you be angry at then??  'just sayin'...

* "if" - What about the tornadoes?

"if" - You or your family member stand out side in this storm & one of these things hit them at that speed??  What would you have to do??  My guess the minimal "drive" to the emergency room?? (in the storm) that is "if" it wasn't more severe an injury @ 80-90 miles an hour I think you can fill in the blanks.  :(

"if" - You try to drive & something like that comes flying at you??  Please don't drive either, as there are also issues with flooding. You could actually drive into deeper waters than you realize as it is muddy & no depth perception.

"if" - Or you stay in your house without window protection & it comes at your home & takes out a chunk of your house??

"if" - What "if" everyone did this around you??

I don't know why I didn't post it sooner with the other hurricane blogs, but it is here now, definitely for those in the Northeast!!  There are going to be some neighbors fighting in the future I would imagine.  Do, you want your neighbor coming over yelling or trying to sue you because your lawn chair is in their living room??.... 'just sayin'

I posted in my previous blog a photo of someone that had a board from his windows come off & go through a tree.  It is one of those "Ripley" type of photos that you can't believe.  Well it is there & it is not photoshop.

How about this, per this scale, not me,  a mobile home could come flying into you house @ 74 mph or trees & signs..that is just the beginning of the wind scale.  Doesn't mention "gusts" or tornadoes or flooding because of poor or saturated grounds & drainage.  It does mention storm surge.  All of these are important.  Along with don't stand in a puddle when you could have a power line down...

There has been so much information out there & yet, there are "STILL" people that are NOT listening....(& they still have a signal)

The problem is they are lying on the beach or sitting outside watching to see "if" the elements are "for real"....

Well guess what they are for real,  (may be not as some have been)  but "very" real!

At the risk of a broken record, I am going to post yet "another" blog on the subject of Hurricanes & Storms in hopes that it will help others...

Pass the word to your neighbor or email this to them if you feel they are not doing their part.  Okay, I am hoping everyone comes through safe!!

Pam, that is a great blog and I'm about to reblog it. I've posted some warnings as well (I'm outside Baltimore) and have heard lots of people not taking it seriously. I asked some neighbors yesterday to move their "stuff" inside (bikes, toys, pots ...) It doesn't take very much to cause serious damage or injuries.. and if nothing happens then only because you prepared!

You are correct.

Being in Hurricane prone Texas we are aware of these items.   But there are times when we have 50 mile per hour gusts and stuff scoots across the patio.

This is something we need to be aware of every day but especially now.

We can get 60 mph winds here in Colorado without a storm. So I know what high winds can do, and you guys are expected to get even stronger winds. My metal shed had one loose screw. The spring winds came and reduced it to rumble. This is a powerful force. If it's not nailed down, it will go flying and hit  something. Hopefully not you or someone else, but you wouldn't want to be the cause of damaging your neighbor's property, or hurting someone.

Dear Andrea - Good for you on calling your neighbor on it!  I hope you find it useful.  Sometimes people just need an "impartial" visual nudge...may be the scale will help??  I don't know it isn't like it hasn't been on the weather channel.  However, I did write the weather channel & told them that I didn't think Mike was setting the right example out there...first time I have ever said that to them or sent them a message..  I thanked them though for doing such a great job!!  They are our anchor & lifeline here during the season!!

Dear Faye-  Great point!!  Yes, we should be aware "every day"!!!  That should be added....you just never know any more with mother nature.

Dear Debbie - Thanks for adding this testimony as well!!  May be if anyone else reads they will know that it can be reduced to rumble...  Just hope they listen...  Oh my couldn't believe it.  Big Hugs!!  :)

Pam-Mother nature can bring on a fury and anything can become a danger protectile with the wind. We are getting some fairly high winds from Irene today and some light rain. I would be afraid of real high winds that are due to hit some areas. Are you in the path being down in Miami. Stay safe and my prayers are with you.

Hi, Pam:  I weathered a number of Typhoons and a couple of Super Typhoons while on Guam, and one of the first items on the list of things to do was to make sure folks got out in their yards to take care of things like this.

One to re-blog!

Beware of falling tree limbs. After the hurricane is over, try to refrain from sightseeing in areas of tall, old trees.

Dear Dennis - Wow, I bet Super Typhoons in Guam would be scary!!  Thank you & the support is appreciated, now if it will happen??  There are always a few that feel that they don't need to do it...  It did look like almost all evacuated, which is GREAT!!

Dear Dave - So TRUE!!  You know they said that it had rained twice as much as normal levels & they were concerned about trees being uprooted easily because the ground was already loose around them.

Well, all they can do now is see... :(  She has gotten so large since she left our area.  If she had been 500 miles wide we would have been suffering, as she was only 200 miles off shore.

There is a great update of the NY Real Estate Blog that tells where they stand as a community & evacuations.  I just read it.  I also read about a few fatalities with falling/flying trees & intersections.

Thank you both!  Hope everyone is safe!!

Dear Sharon Lee - We were in the original cone & are many times in the paths because of location...but then we were spared thankfully, unlike other storms.

Dear Andrea - Thank you also for the re-blog...it will be great to have the word spread & thanks!  Sorry it took me a bit, but I was trying to help my daughter move today...

Night, Hugs & Please Be safe.

Pam, sobering post. I am hopeful that you remain out of harm's way. My parents lived in Rockport Texas and evacuated many times. Their neighbors were always there to help them. Keeping good thought for the East Coast and prayers for all. Have a good Sunday!

Dear Jeanean - Thanks, yes.  We are good here.  We prepared, etc. but were spared thankfully.  It is a hassle, but never once do we say you shouldn't do it.  My Family is always stressed, especially with the larger ones after Andrew.  Thank you for visiting & Happy Sunday to you!!

Great tips Pam & an important information to share. It sounds like the hurricane downgraded luckily just in time before wrecking more intense havok on the N.E.

Pam- Good post.  Anything that is not anchored is a potential missile and for many of us here in Florida, that can include your hanging plants and little decorations as well.

Dear Kathy - Hey there :).  Thank you & yes those items too are very, very important!!  Everything outside basically not anchored as you say.  I can't believe that some are groaning that it was too much hype...it may have been a one but that was a BIG storm 500 miles wide when it got to them...  Looked like a lot happen to me, as they aren't conditioned like this area?   May be it helped someone.  Thank you as your comments mean a lot!  Pam
