My father was a Chaplin in the Army and he had recently returned from Korea and so we were living together in a "non-military" home in my mother's hometown (Dauphin, PA) as a family. It was very nice to have a real home and not typical of most of the years of my life. We lived right across the Street from the Middle Paxton Elementary School in Dauphin, PA. The house was for sale about 2 years ago and this is a picture of my house!
In those days students that lived a mile or less from the school were considered "walkers." I walked to school - it was a very short and enjoyable jaunt across the street and into my kindergarten class.
My teacher was Miss Valentine and she was definitely the love of my life (except for my kitty - Dixie). I don't remember a lot about what I did during the 1/2 day hours of my kindergarten class, but I remember Miss Valentine and how much she loved me and how dedicated she seemed to be to ME! (I assume that the rest of the class felt the same way about Miss Valentine!)
What I remember most about Kindergarten is my daily walk to the class, accompanied by my father, Miss Valentine and on a sadder note, I remember that about halfway through my 9 month period of walks across the street, I found my beautiful and much loved kitty, Dixie had been hit by a car and was no longer with us. I was devestated. My father made me go to class that day, he forced me to continue to walk past Dixie and go in the classroom. I fell into the arms of Miss Valentine and found soltice in her embrace. Of course I survived, my parents had a new kitty for me when I returned home from class that day. . . a stuffed one. We buried Dixie and had a very nice memorial service that I talked about during Show & Tell when I presented my new "stuffed" treasure to the class.
What did I learn that Kindergarten year of my life? Good question! I think I learned I was special (thank you Miss Valentine!) and that bad things do happen in life -the trick is to not let them ruin your future . . . and it helps to be living in a home, surrounded by people that love you. :)
