Interior Redesign in Palm Beach County: 3 Tips You Need to Know When Hiring a Contractor for Your New Impact Windows

Whether you live in the north or here in sunny South Florida, replacing your existing windows with Impact Windows is a windowgood way to update your home.   In addition to the added value should you decide to sell your home, there are many benefits that come with impact windows

Besides protecting you from Hurricanes, Impact Windows can help deter break-ins; are more energy efficient; can save you money from insurance discounts; reduce noise and can offer some UV protection for your furniture and flooring.

So Let's Shed Some "Light" on what you need to know before you hire your Impact Window contractor.

1. Read your Contract carefully!- If you are not comfortable with this, enlist the aid of a knowledgeable friend.   Here are some points you want to pay particular attention to:
      * Make sure start and end dates are listed.
      * Make sure the scope of the work is detailed along with a description of the  material to be used.
      * Check the list of permits and licenses that the contract spells out.
      *  Know what the clean up policy is
      *  Make sure warranties are covered.

contract 2.  Get references and actually speak to them.  Be cautious if your contractor asks you to obtain the permits and licenses.  Never feel pressured to sign right away.  And, show them the door if they have "leftover material from another job'

3.  Do your research.  Go to a showroom and look at the product.  Ask what the warranty is.  Ask questions.  And do  your research on the Internet.

Those windows do look like a great value.  Super advice and watch outs for having them installed.  If you're going to do it, do it right!

Good morning Kathy,

The point that really hits home with me is about the start and end dates.  That can be crucial.  Too many times this is looked over and boy can that be annoying!

Kathy, New windows is something we'll have to consider here soon, but fortunately hurricane proof isn't something we typically have to worry about in the Cincinnati area :)

Hi Kathy--great post.  Often I see consumers buy windows based on price, but since these are such a large portion of the home it pays to do one's homework.  You're so right--definitely read the contract and check references.

Hi Kathy - "Impact Windows" was new for me. Around here we focus on energy savings LowE3 vinyl and tilt if they can afford it.  It's amazing what a new set of windows can do for you!

Kathy, folks would be very happy to have upgraded to Impact windows along the eastern coast!  Great advise to be sure and read the warranty too.  Something we seem to overlook unfortunately all too often.

Michael- I don't think they do ... well maybe a very small number do.

Rob- I think so many of the problems begin with not reading the contract and also not knowing what to look for.

Marco- I think we've all been taught from an early age to read the contract before signing but most contracts are not very user friendly unless you wrote it or are an attorney.

Debbie- I'm sure the same would apply when looking for a flooring specialist.  I'd say call Debbie!!

Hi Cindy- that and the permits and materials.  We have some contractors who go door to door in some of our retirement communities and take advantage of a lot of people.

BLiz- let's hope you never have to consider a hurricane in Ohio!  I'd imagine you'd be looking for insulation from the cold!

Janet- You've got to do your homework on these purchase.. know what you're buying and know what questions to ask.

Cathy- we had the old jalousie windows in one of our houses here.  They all needed to be replaced.  I liked the concept of them but ours were worn from all of the salt air.

Pamela- after the hurricanes we've had in Florida many have gone to the impact glass.

Kathy, point number one cannot be stressed enough!  Even hiring an attorney shouldn't be that expensive to review the document and keep the homeowner out of trouble.

Good advice.

It is amazing what people do (or don't do) when hiring folks to do construction projects. Do you watch " Holmes on Homes " on HGTV? He's the guy that cleans up all the messes left by bad contractors, inspections, etc.

So much of the problem comes from people NOT understanding what to ask...this is a good step in education re: windows.

Kathy - How timely for your post as we are redoing our siding along with replacing all the  windows and I'd buy Impact Windows just for the sun protection alone - I hate it when furniture fades due to sunlight! I will definitely look into buying these when we are ready to start this project. Thanks for the information!

Great information. We don't suffer from hurricanes where I live but always good to do your due diligence when hiring a company.

Sharon- no kidding and please read the contract.

Mona- it's better than paying for it later, right!

Louise- and some don't understand about getting permits, etc.  You've got to ask questions.

Hi Lou- I think we see a lot of situations here where people have lost a lot of money.

Debb- Oh yes, I've seen him.  You just have to shake your head and wonder!

Kristine- Glad I could help.  When we bought our home in VA, we had to replace part of the wood flooring that was faded by the sun.

Wendy- Get references, ask questions and read the contract!!

Dear Kathy ~  This is a great post!  There are SO many benefits to Impact Windows, even if you don't live in a hurricane area...as you said theft deterrent, energy efficiency, noise reduction, & preserving those beautiful wood floors, carpet, or furniture.  Great posts always!  They both have to go forward I think as they are both great posts for everyone!
