GETTING GROUNDED IN THE HORSE BARNS

Horses in Estacada

Yesterday I was presented with an opportunity I could not turn down.  A good friend of mine from my early teen years has three horses and invited me to come out to the horse barns and help her groom them.  I jumped at the chance as I love horses and have not had one since my two girls were young.  I have missed that part of my life.

We drove to the barn about an hour away in Estacada, Oregon, beautiful countryside and horses everywhere.

When we arrived we brought them in from the pasture to the barn for grooming, but I had forgotten everything one has to do in order to do just that bring them in.

Making sure gates are closed going in and then out and putting the halters on so you could lead them back to the barn. Making sure they do not get too close as they have a hierarchy.

WOW, What beauties and how sweet they are.  The horse I was fortunate enough to work on was really sweet, (appropriately her name is Sugar), laid her head on my shoulder, nuzzled my neck, smelled my hair and literally checked me out.  Can I say how much I loved that, I felt so connected to her.

She moaned in her horse way when I brushed her and massaged around her head and neck.  Oh, she loves massage and loves to be brushed.  She loves the human touch.

This was one of the most grounding things for me that I have had in a long time and just being with the horses and absorbing their energy worked great magic.

How fortunate am I, will I go back?  You bet I will as often as possible, with a big thank you to my friend Joyce, I may even get back into riding a little.  I am not the greatest rider, but willing to get back up on that horse and perhaps ride into the sunset.

What a great way to end the week and start the weekend, just by

Nice to read and see the pictures.  It brings me back to some fun times in my youth and takes my mind off work.  Thanks

My mom just loves to have horses around. I gave up riding when I figured out I was spending as much time (or More) between the horse and the ground, either getting on or falling off! :)

Than,

Your mom is fortunate, in my opinion, if she has horses around.  They are a lot of work I know, but for some reason for me it takes me to another level when I am around them.  I am not a very good rider and have had the good fortune not to fall of off or be thrown off.  I have had a couple of close calls when one horse ran away with me and then reared.  Instinct kicked in and I was able to stay on and calm the horse down.  Think someone was watching over me?

Thank you for sharing this story!  It took me also back to a place that I used to enjoy when I was young, and miss it.  I think that is why they also have some special camps for children.  Many realize their gift to us.  I think that Sheila Newton knows of rescues if you are interested in owning again.  She is on the opposite coast in the Carolinas.

Hi Pam,

You are so welcome in the sharing of my story.  Horses have always been special with me but I never owned one when I was young.  We did buy a horse when my two girls were around ten and seven, a horse that had been a race horse but could not race any longer.  She was a good horse and my oldest girl rode her like the wind.  Her long blond hair just flying straight out and my youngest was the one who would sit underneath the horse when grooming was taking place.  A great time.

Thank you for the name, maybe someone will see it here on the rain and give Sheila a call. I am so glad you stopped by to read the post, I hope you have a good day and week.

Mary,

They are very soulful creatures aren't they? But then, many are when we give them the chance.

My sister always had a horse around - even in Alaska (though, not the Fairbanks years). She was great with them. I was a bit too young and got frightened by one once, and never really spent the time with them that she did. But, I still can appreciate them and enjoy horseback riding now and again.

You should obviously get back to something that feels so "right" and centering for you. I'm all for it!  Get a horse. ( Or at least spend more time with your pals - Joyce and Sugar.

Have a wonderful afternoon and thanks for sharing your story, I enjoyed it.   Dj

Debb,

I am so fortunate, my friend Joyce has invited me to come out with her whenever I would like and how often I would like.  She has 3 horses and they all like and need to be groomed and for one person it is more difficult and time consuming.  So I plan on at least once a month and more often if I am able, to help her.  She also asked me if I wanted to start riding again this winter in the arena as that will be safer and more comfortable for me.  I can just see myself in the pasture getting on Sugar, my knees wobbling, she notices and goes A-HA, and takes off with me holding on only by my hands, legs straight back in the wind.  Can't you just see it now?  Whoa, Sugar.

Thanks so much for your comments.flying horsesCould not quite get the image I was looking for
