A.H. Parker High School Gets a Facelift

My father graduated from Parker High School.  He played football there and sported jersey #49.  Growing up black and in Birmingham, AL prior to the 70's meant that you or your parents likely graduated from Parker High School too.

Parker holds an indisputable place in Birmingham's Civil Rights History as well as history in general.  On Sunday, the doors were open to the public for a tour of the new building which opened this month.  Graduates from the 1940's to present were there for this grand event.

Ninety year old Walter Floyd called the new building "a marvelous structure" according to the Birmingham News.  Although the neighborhood in which the school is located is in decline, kids from all around Birmingham still want to attend this historic school.

Generations of families have attended Parker High School.  Kids boast that they as well as their great, great grandparents graduated from A.H. Parker High School.

My life has had it's share of stories from a man who loved and still loves his high school:  My dad, Lucious Hughley, Jr.  I don't believe there are any untold stories left in him.

Congrats to the alumni of Parker High School.

Charita, I know the place had to be packed yesterday!  They really did a beautiful job with the renovation from what I can see in the photo.

Hope you write those stories from your Dad down, Charita so you can pass them along. Must have been an amazing gathering yesterday with lots of people remembering their times in the history of the school.

Good for your community for providing a facelift to a historical school instead of ignoring it and letting it decay!

Hey Charita-nice story and a proud sounding school and the base for a strong community. Your dad reminds me of mine as he was the handsome football captain that married the head cheerleader (my mom).

Hello friends of Parker High School,

I just launched a web page featuring my latest completed commission, a bronze sculpture of early 20th century educator Arthur Harold Parker for the Birmingham Board of Education.
I thought you would appreciate seeing it. Paste the following link into your browser window:
