A Question To Ask Yourself To Maintain Perspective

Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Trump HairWe have all seen those people in our lives around us or on TV or the movies. With egos the size of Montana. Self importance. Self grandizement. The world revolves around them. Where is the humility in these people, that OTHERS count too?  For all of us with power, fame, wealth as we climb the ladder,

A Question To Ask Yourself To Maintain Perspective.

That question is, Is what I am doing or worrying so much going to matter in a 100 years? Probably not.

Pearl Harbor and a 9/11 event stick. What you are doing that you think is so important, most likely no one will know about or remember even.

I say that, because we really have to stop thinking we are all so important in everything we do. You see high levels of narcissism on Twitter especially by celebrities telling you of their latest projects or what restaurant they ate at. Even Facebook posts by us commoners. It is entertainment at best but importance NO.

You are driving your car to the Grand Tetons. 100 years from now? What was your name again? Perspective is good, cause it helps us focus on MEANINGFUL things not so much drivel which our social media has been driving us towards. Love of family, taking care of others, IMPROVING life for ourselves and those around us. So for ANY OF US, as we get those days with our big head or are proud of our Trump hair, think of that question of how insignificant most of what we are jazzed up about now really is.

The one BIG exception. What you do in the life of a child IS VERY SIGNIFICANT nearly 100 years out. You are launching a part of YOU into the future. I can't think of many things much more worthwhile than that. A reason I admire all teachers in all their ranks to the highest degree. BTW, did you know we ALL are teachers?

Hi Gary - We have a sign in our office that helps keep us grounded - it says: It's Just Real Estate. And it went up years ago in reaction to way too many people being way too wonderful. You're spot on about the kids - that's probably the most meaningful and important thing we'll ever do, and that should be plenty to satisfy us.

Gary - So true..    We are all teachers, and most of us are pretty good ones.   That is a way to give, give, give toward the future.

Hi Gary, Another salient point and for sure one that should resonate with all of us. A life well lived is a treasure for which a legacy can exist. One riddled in fear or complacency leaves little for any others to benefit from.

Gary, Gary, Gary--I cannot find enough superlatives for the points that you always make in your missives on ActiveRain.

If we all started our day by checking in with you, we would be happier, calmer, and not blame others. We would also continue to strive for humility and self-excellence at the same time!

What a thought provoking post.  (Does it come in response to someone or something?)  We should always strive to keep perpective in our daily lives, and the 100 year question is a good marker.  And I love the sign in Dick's office (It's Just Real Estate)!

Oh my Gary - don't get me going.  I always am urging folks not to cut the number of teachers ... or their salaries.  The teachers I know give so much and most are not paid very well for all that they do.

Gary - incredible post.  I will share with you a story from my week-end.  My husband has poultry house - and this Sunday a.m. we woke to one of them in flames (we had 6).  Was that bad?  Yes, but we had insurance and it will be rebuilt - and even if it isn't - well, what will it matter in 100 years?

Right after we discovered the fire, we learned that a single mother who goes to our church was killed in the early morning hours, leaving behind two darling children ages 9 and 11 - and there is no one in the extended family who can take those children....They may end up on foster care.

And you are so right - we all are teachers - but the question is - WHAT ARE WE TEACHING?

Louise: Sorry to hear about the fire and the tragedy about the single mother. Moving on is always hardest to do even when maintaining any kind of perspective with shocking events like those you described.

Gary, I live by your words posted here.  I see alot of people getting upset, uptight, nervous, and overly excited about things that are of not permanent or have and long term meaning.  The concept of teaching children being the upmost of importantance is vital to the worlds existance in the future.  People have to realize that we go but once arount this world,,So we have to make the best out of it.  Helping others (family, friends, clients, ect..) is what success and happiness is all about.  It's not about the selfish "It's all about me" attitude.
