What I Learned In Kindergarten....

Have you found me in the picture???? (answer at the bottom of the post)
What did I learn in Kindergarten?
I so remember Kindergarten vividly! I don't think I even understood what Kindergarten was until I was there.
I remember during the summer before Kindergarten my mom helped me to write my name as that is what Kindergarteners were supposed to do....Well it was in block capital letters and apparently you were supposed to write you name with upper and lower cases!
In order for me to go to Kindergarten my mom had to pack up my baby brother in the stroller and my 3 years old little sister as we walked the 3-4 blocks down to the class room....she had to pack them up again to come and pick me up! Mom and Dad only had one car in those days so mom walked everywhere....I even remember walking to Down Town Nampa Idaho.
Apparently when it got colder another Mom who car pooled some of the other kids made arrangements with my Mom to take me to school! Mrs Baxter told mom I was the ray of sunshine....the other kids were half asleep but when I got in to the car I was such a chatter bug that i had them all awake and happy in the 3-4 blocks to kindergarten! I don't really remember that. I do remember that the next year she got really sick and died.....although I am not really sure if I really knew what "died" meant.
I remember that we had our Kindergarten in Nampa First Christian Church....the church I still attend.....
We had our class room and we used the "big" fellowship hall for our Nap Room....naps were very important in Kindergarten....I still actually do enjoy a good nap but I just don't get one very often!
I learned in Kindergarten that you make friends....some of these friends and I went to school together nearly every year until we graduated from high school....Some of them I am even Facebook Buddies with still! Pretty good for 40 years of friendships!!!
I learned that in Kindergarten you get yummy snacks....and your Mom got to bring special snacks for your birthday! I was mortified that my sister ate her cookie at my "birthday" snack time while everyone was saying a prayer....she was only 3 though so it was ok!
In kindergarten we had a few field trips....one was to the Eye Doctor down the street....I went for a check up ....and later that summer I had to get glasses....I even had a few years of visual therapy as my astigmatism was so bad. I am pretty blind with out glasses or contact lenses.
I also learned about aspirations as to what we wanted to be when we grew up! For many young girls in 1970 the goal was to be a Mommy, a Teacher or a Nurse....I wanted to be a Flower Seller.....I am not sure where that came from ... but I still love my flowers! It is so theraputic to work in the dirt!
My favorite song in Kindergarten was "Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree" Because it was a Parochial Kindergarten we learned all sorts of other songs such at "Jesus Loves Me" and "Zaccheus", and "I will make you FIshers of Men"
One of the other memories of Kindergarten was the end of the year Field Trip to Boise Zoo....we got to bring a sack lunch! It was pretty important stuff to a youngster.
I also remember how BIG I felt at our Kindergarten Graduation....we were off and onto bigger and better things! So old and "mature" LOL
I also remember my special teacher Iris Robinson......She was so important to me that year! A few years ago when I had a booth down at the Nampa Farmers Market she stopped by ...after all these years she knew who I was and re-introduced her self....I did know who she was...I recognized her!
So you see....many things and life lessons were learned in Kindergarten!!!
Oh and where am I in the picture? 2nd Row from the top...Far right in the skirt and vest with the red blouse!!! I think I even had my beloved gogo boots on!
