In a day when people hardly know their neighbor - I am lucky to live in a neighborhood where we all know each other and watch out for one another. Today we had a golf cart ordinance passed by the Board of Supervisors in James City County. We are now officially a "golf cart community" even though we have no golf course! My neighborhood is Chickahominy Haven in Lanexa, VA. We are on the Chickahominy River which runs into the James River -near historic Jamestown. We have approx. 350 homes and well over 150 golf carts that we use to visit neighbors, go to parties, ride to the marina to eat and sometimes just cruise around and enjoy looking at the nearby water! We all pay to live in a waterfront community and our taxes certainly reflect that! Some citizens here complained about the golf cart use and started a major meltdown with the County and with our way of life. We got a petition going and presented our plan to the County and after several months of work on many people's part - the ordeal is over. We are grateful!
On a Saturday you can easily see 40 carts out throughout the neighborhood and everyone waves and says Hello and stops to chat or tell you your yard looks great! How could this possibly be wrong with most people today not even knowing their neighbors name. Whenever someone has a party - and let me tell you there are lots - you can see well over 50 golf carts in the yard- just like a parking lot. Not only are we saving the environment by not driving a car - but we are also bringing back a better time when we all looked out for one another !I am so lucky to be a realtor living here so I can also work my "farm" on my golf cart and everyone is really starting to recognize when it is my newsletter delivery time and I am out and about! Many of our residents are senior citizens who can't walk well - this gets them out of the house and makes them able to be in fresh air and look at the blue herons, the geese, the ducks and the passing boats! We have some carts that are worth over $10,000 and some that look a little more worn- but still are moving! I am happy - happy we can keep our little community alive with our special way of interacting with one another. Every neighborhood should be so lucky!
