If a hurricane ravages your neighborhood, knocking out your power and phone service, how are you going to file an insurance claim?
Some national insurers and at least one Florida-based insurer now have mobile applications that allow you to file a claim and send photos of the damage from your smart phone.
Security First Insurance in Ormond Beach launched a new iPhone app this week. She said Security First, which has about 130,000 property insurance policyholders statewide, was the first Florida insurer to launch a mobile app in 2009 but people have mainly been using it to get quotes, find an agent, make payments and track claims. The new app is focused just on claims and it allows customers to file claims even when they don't have their policy numbers handy.
Other insurance companies that offer apps are USAA, Farmers and American Family
