This is a excellent blog and sage advice on how to choose contractors on any job you want done! Do they really understand what you want and the best way to understand is if they actually know about the subject they are trying to create for you. Thanks to Dan Edward Phillips' excellent post !

"Can they cook" is an important consideration when selecting a kitchen-remodeling contractor.

Any 'kitchen remodeling contractor' needs to be licensed, bonded, insured etc.  Verify that they are.  There have been several great Active Rain posts on the verification process, follow the advice carefully.

But then the selection process begins.  An important consideration is; "can they cook"?  Does the contractor know how to 'use' a kitchen?  While the contractor is in the process of remodeling your kitchen, if something does not make sense, will they address the issue?

Even if you have an architect design your kitchen, the bottom line will be the contractor.  Following the 'plans' is great but what if the plans 'miss' something.  You want your kitchen to be as practical and as functional as possible.

Would you have your car repaired by someone who can not drive?  Would you have your computer repaired by someone who has never used one?

Kitchens are workspaces and 'functionality' is critical.

Interview each contractor and ask important questions.  Find out their 'level of knowledge' on cooking and baking before making the final selection.  Remodeling projects are challenging, select a contractor who will be looking out for your best interest, not just your financial interest.

You will be the one 'working' in the kitchen for years to come, not the contractor!
