If you will be in the Sacramento area this weekend, here's a great way to spend a day (or even a weekend)! The annual Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento will open with a ticketed reception Friday night, but it will run for FREE all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday this Labor Day Weekend, September 3, 4 and 5, 2011.
If you have never been to Old Sac, it already has the feel of the old west with its old buildings and wood sidewalks, but for Gold Rush Days they bring in 200 tons of dirt to cover any paved streets.
There will be cowboys, stagecoaches, buggy rides, reenactments of gunfights in the street, seven stages of entertainment including some great music, food booths, Artisan Alley with old time crafts being demonstrated, street dancers, several parades, a barbeque, and lots of other stuff to enjoy.
Old Sacramento is a Historical State Park, and you will also find monuments, plaques and statues around town while you explore. You will also find "rallies" celebrating women's suffrage, abolitionists, and other recreations of history.
There will be a tent city as it was in the original settlement, with saloons, doctors, dentist and undertaker, and selling some old favorites to eat and drink. How about some homemade sarsaparilla? Maybe some local ale?
As if all of that isn't enough, the 5 museums in Old Sacramento will be FREE ADMISSION all weekend. The museums include:
California State Railroad Museum
California State Military Museum
Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum
All of the regular old-timey looking stores and super restaurants will be open as usual, and I think you will find it hard to see and do everything in one day. Thank goodness it will be open for three days!
To add to the fun, many visitors will be dressed in period costumes of around the 1850s, as will many of the employees of the shops and restaurants.
There are additional programs such as the Old Sacramento Underground Tours and Excursion Train Rides offered at their normal rates.
For more information, directions, and parking information, check out the Gold Rush Days website or call (916) 808-7059.
