Hurricane Irene, Aftermath in Prospect CT

By the time Hurricane Irene Came into CT it was down graded to a tropical storm, but the winds still topped out at over 70 mph. Many town residents were without power and some still are. At the height of the storm at least 26 town roads were blocked from tree damage.

Utility crews were out all over the area towns taking care of the big damage first. Tree cutting crews were working along side the utility people to get the limbs away as quickly and safely as possible.

There was one reported fatality attributed to the storm. Late Sat evening evidently a power line came down across the back of a house setting in on fire. A resident of the home was overcome.

At least 2 volunteer firemen were also shocked by the wire, and taken to the local hospital as a precaution and released.

The residents of Prospect were well prepared and came through fine, even though some are still without power.

In my neighborhood, aside from the scattered leaves and twigs that needed to be cleaned up. there was the broken glass on one of my doors from a flying branch, and my neioghbor got the worst of a tree/shed collision.

Ironically, it was a day after the storm that I got my electronic issues when the local cable provider too a server hit and left me without Internet access for almost a day.

Hurricane Irene came into Prospect CT, and left us with very few scars. Some areas of the state were not so fortunate as there are still almost 400,000 homes without electrical service.

Ed, I was amazed at how over-prepared they were in Manhattan, and at how much serious damage there was to the north after the stom was downgraded.  When I finally got home to DC, there is a tree in my back yard that is perilously leaining against another tree, without which the back porch on my house would have been whacked.

Hi Ed, it is amazing the damage that can be done by wind and rain no matter the category of the storm.  Glad to hear that you are safe and had only minor damage.

I'm glad you all survived Hurricane Irene with just minor damages. It could have been much worse. I hope the electricity is back on soon for the unfortunate one's still without power.

Barbara, you without the Internet would have been catastrophic, but having everyone being treated to special Mom care after not having it for a while would have been interesting.

Pat, a lot of damage that took place to the North was probably because the track went further West than projected and caught many people unprepared.

Judith, Nature has powers that people continue to under estimate

Michael, some areas may be without power for better than a week

Juli, in our area the damage was minimal, fortunately

Wanda, just a lot of wet basements to dry and leaves and yards to clean up.

Gail, the shore area did take a beating for sure. Glad that your only problem was no power

Ellie, sorry to hear that, but candle light is so romantic

Ed, Irene did her share of damage here in Connecticut, but I just saw some picture of Vermont today, and in comparison to Vermont we got off easy.

Ken, I made sure when I bought my Blackberry that I would be able to set it up as a hot spot receiver as well, but I needed access to my email account, and not only was my Internet down, but my provider lost a server as well.

George, the flooding in Vermont has created some new ilsands with a lot of damage.

Debra, just south of you they got considerable damage, Thanks, all is well.

Ed, I just spent an hour talking with a client of mine that weathered Irene in Kingston NY.  She was on a generator for almost 80 hours and had to take many detours to get back to Canada on on the 30th.

Dear Ed,

Having grown up in Trumbull and Fairfield - I watched the storm very closely fromwhere I live now in Atlanta. I am sorry for those who lost their lives and property and grateful the storm was not any worse.

Have a happy day -
