Mobile Apps Aren't Quite There Yet

SmartPhone StuffI like living in reality when it comes to technology. And despite 300,000 or so mobile apps for the iPhone and 100,000 for the Android I have concluded

Mobile Apps Aren't Quite There Yet.

They tell us to optimize our web sites for mobile use. The apps ARE USEFUL, so much cool stuff. Two problems I see in the SmartPHONES at least.

Screen size: A laptop or iPad/tablet computer screen is much easier to maneuver.

Network speed: Face it, the cellular 3G speed STILL is not fast enough. WiFi is ok of course but you have to stay in their ZONE so how mobile is that? 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) cellular networks will fix this with blazing networks over the next two years.

My conclusion, the simpler apps are fine, but the more they program functions into them with small screen size a full laptop does a better job on a LAN, or WiFi, or an iPad. We are GETTING there, just not there yet. If anything MANY mobile apps are so ANNOYING on the small screens and ESPECIALLY with the slow networks. Painting the screens, response times, glitches, hung software, TAKE ALL mobile APPS today with a grain of salt and if you CAN have a larger screen and FASTER network TODAY go that route.

Two years from now maybe SLIGHTLY larger screens than a phone and BLAZING networks we will be there FINALLY.

Great post!  I appreciate your level of knowledge on the subject.  I haven't gotten started on them, although I did try to ready my smart phone for Goomzee and for QR Codes.  I'm light years behind you!

Amen: I'm beginning to believe phones should be for dialing, talking and hanging up.  Not worth the frustration. Have you noticed everywhere you go folks just sit and look at their phone, wonder what they are thinking.

Gary, I like my laptop just fine and have been thinking about a tablet. They're nice and compact and perfect for presentations. What good would be having apps on my phone if I couldn't see well enough to read them?

Gary - I'm right there with you - the screens are so small (although I can't see anything since turning 40) and am thinking about taking the plunge and buying an iPad. It is perfect for my staging company when I want to show my portfolio - Smartphones just don't cut it.

I think the thing with the screen size isn't even SEEING them, it is just using your fingers, there is not enough real estate to maneuver around on them. The current tablet screens are a good compromise, a little bigger and mobile. The networks still are poor though other than WiFi.

Gary, I have fat fingers plus bad aim. So the smart phone is OK, but for a phone to have the sort of screen size that I need, it would just be too large to be practical.

Gary, I agree. There is still a long way to go before I feel good about it. They are not large enough for my eyes! Especially in the TX sun...great post. Deb

I agree... we aren't there yet.  But there are some that make my life so much easier.  Love my suprakey app--and it is pretty complicated!  Kathy

Hi Gary, good point!  Sometimes, I can't even read the pages I pull up on my Blackberry because they are so small.  Of course, I have an even bigger problem in that network connections in the more rural areas is frequently very sketchy.

Gary, I have to agree. I can't stand the apps on my Android....too tinyand useless. I bought a tablet and it is much better. In the field, I do need it to check email and to get MLS showing instructions on the fly. So much better! Good post!

GARY- I have taken a backseat to technology waiting and watching- Your point about the speed issues, compounded with small screens and functionality is excellent.  I think having bluetooth technology integrated with a tablet would be the best of both worlds for us Mature Folks!

Gary - you are absolutely correct. The mobile world is not there yet for all businesses. Some may and some may still have a long way. We'll see what happen in the next 2 years.

Hi Gary, My iPad is so much faster than my 3G iphone. The iPhone 4 is way faster than the iPhone 3 and more reliable than the previous phone. My iPad is so much faster than even my desktop Mac. But the iPad still have limitations with the MLS's around the US. We don't get our iPad ap here in SD until November at the earliest. But it is coming and other MLS are not there yet. I would think yo are right about the timing though. So far, I think the iPad is the winner in the challenge of being able to use technology for real estate needs in a timely and efficient way.  Glad you are in the group!

Just got my iPad, and I'm still trying to figure out the best way to do real estate forms on the iPad.  However, I LOVE my iphone 3GS with the update for 4GS.  Maybe the difference is expectations... I don't expect to do forms on my iPhone... I expect to check my bank balance, play solitaire, do email... and I can look up listings, when I'm on the road.  I'd never rely on it for all my MLS efforts.
