Up on a Pedestal (Sink) With the Atlanta Home Inspector

    pedestal sink

Pedestal sinks have become a popular and space saving item in

homes. They are also pleasing to the eye, as far as bathroom equipage

goes. Recently, we have encountered several such sinks during our

home inspections.  Now, encountering them may not seem that strange,

what we are finding, however, that is strange, is the manner in which

they are installed.

When installing a pedestal sink, if the back of the pedestal is enclosed,

chances are likely that the wall will have to be opened up in order to

move up the drain. With the wall opened, support should be installed in

the sheetrock in order to properly anchor the basin to the wall. There

are two hollowed out areas on each side of the lower backside of the

basin, in which the bolts can be installed.  What we are finding, is that

the bolts have not been installed. unattached bathroom sink with toggle bolt

It is true that the pedestal is caulked to the floor and the basin is

caulked to the wall to insure support. This occurs in the closed back

and the open - backed pedestal style of sink. However, omitting the

bolts which anchor the basin to the wall can become a safety issue,

particularly for those families with children. Children love to climb and

hang, and could quite possibly apply enough pressure to yank the sink

from the wall.

Hardware stores offer toggle bolts in plastics and metals, that can be

used. The support those offer could be in question, though. As in most

scenarios, it is better to be safe than sorry. Also, keep in mind that even

though opening up your wall to install proper support might be hard

work, or costly right now, it is a measure that will save you money and

time in the long run.

David, I think that no one really ever plans well when a pedestal sink is involved.  As you stated, most of them that I have seen have not been bolted.  Or if they are bolted, it's only toggle bolts.

I say when installing a pedestal sink, put blocking in the wall for bolting the sink to.  Otherwise, it will come down, even with toggles sometimes!

Good Morning David and Bonnie, excellent input for properly installing a pedistal sink.  A little extra work is all it takes.
