Can You Imagine Not Being Able to Read?

booksWhat do you with books when you're done reading them?  Do you read them again?  Or are you like me and stack them in a corner because you might reread them?  You never do though, do you?

Have you thought about recycling them?

Several years ago I was introduced to a very interesting website called Paperbackswap.com.  I liken it to an online library.  Initially you need to offer out 10 books to the community.  Every time a member receives one of your books, you receive a credit which will allow you to pick a book from another member.  The only cost is the price of postage when you ship a book.  Receiving a book?  Free!  Don't want any more books or can't use up your credits?  No problem.   A few times a year, you can donate your credits to a deserving school or a member of the military.

Some of my books aren't very popular on Paperbackswap.com so for those that don't make the cut, I give to the Ashburn library for their annual book sale.  Recently though I participated in a book sale and saw that the books that weren't purchased were just thrown away.  The horror!!

Yesterday, I saw a link that Better World Books, an online bookstore, posted and thought I'd share.  What's unique about them is that they donate money to literacy programs when you purchase books from them.  They've taken doing good one step further and are now asking for your books which they will sell, donate or recycle with the proceeds going to literacy programs. They'll even pay for shipping.

Can you imagine not being able to read??

Nancy, the Crow River Senior Center where I work has a very large lending library.  Want a book?  Take it and you can bring it back or keep it.  Donating? Great.  We take them all.  Some we donate to Goodwill, but most are kept for recycling through the library, hardcovers and paperbacks.  Win-win for everyone.

I liked your post and will reblog it later.
