Imitation - the sincerest form of flattery!

By
Home Stager with Colorado Premier Staging, LLC

I had a home that I had recently staged sell.  Unfortunately the Realtor failed to notify me until 1:00 the day of closing!  I quickly rearranged my schedule and my assistant and I, with my poor 83 year old mother in tow, headed to the house.  As we pulled up my heart sank.  The new owners were already moving in.  Not your most optimal scenario.  However, my assistant and I headed up to the door, introduced ourselves and apologized for the timing.

They were a charming couple and we chatted a little as we were boxing up our staging items and they were arrangining their boxes.  We moved into what the marketing literature called the "sun room" (an enclosed porch) and the couple told us that they had liked the staging so much they were going to replicate it as best as they could.  I told them where I had purchased most of the items and also told them I was pleased they were so impressed with the staging. They went on to say that they loved the  little "scene" I had placed in the kitchen, it had given them a really good laugh.

As professional home stagers, we do not always receive feedback on how our staging is received by potential buyers.  We can judge by the time on market and feedback from the seller or realtor but it's always better to get feedback direct from the target buyers.  So although the circumstance weren't the best, the outcome was rewarding!

I am surprised that you were notified of the closing so last minute! However, it worked out well b/c you got some valuable feedback!

Hi Teri--Imitation is indeed the great form of flattery.  I, too, like what you did in the kitchen.

Liz, I was very surprised also by the timing of the notification.  I made a point to ask the realtor to notify me when they set the date so I can be prepared since I have other staged properties with that realtor.

Mary, you're right, the feedback did make my day.

Thanks Janet.

How cute is your note in the kitchen cupboard, that is something I have never seen done before.  I love it!

Too cute - very memorable!  Did you think about selling the items the buyers liked so much?

Thanks Janna.  It's something that I do that gives the buyer a good chuckle while helping to make the home more memorable to potential buyers.

Thanks Julia.  I would probably have sold them the furnishings had they asked.  I did that with another property that sold shortly after this one.  The buyers loved the kitchen setup and the conversation area in the living room.  So I sold them those pieces.

Teri, I bet that situation was awkward, and that Realtor should have alerted you with enough time to remove your staging items without being in hurry!

Joan, it certainly was awkward.  But at least the couple was very nice and understanding.  I've since asked the realtor to notify me when they set the closing date so I'll know in advance!
