Tall Ship Parade Delights San Diegans

San Diego Tall Ship Parade of Sail

The Californinian

The Tall Ship Parade on the San Diego Bay thrilled watchers from Shelter Island to the Coronado Bridge and over to the Embaracdero where they moored up for the beginning of today's Festival of Sail. Sponsored by the San Diego Maritime Museum, this late summer event is one the most impressive events during the year.

The HMS Surprise below is a reprodction of the the Royal Navy Ship named the Rose. She manuvered in very close to where I was taking photos so getting close up details was very much easier.

The Festival of Sail will last through Monday Sept 5th ( Labor Day) at the Maritime Museum on the Enbaracdero.

Here are a couple more of the Ships participating

William: I hope those huge ocean swells had subsided for this event! We were at La Jolla yesterday, and the waves were enourmous! It looks like all was well in the Bay.

Ahoy William-Anchors away. Smiling. I couldn't resist my friend. You do take the best pics. I would love to be out sailing the high seas. It would feel so carefree and adventurous. Now it might not be too good if I came across any pirates though. Hope your weekend is fabulous.

Hi William - One of these days I'll have to try to be down there for that.  My grandfather was a sailor on tall ships, and I heard some stories when I was little.

I have a certified copy of his page in the Register of seamen, showing the ships he was on and his dates of service on each.

Those pictures are simply amazing!  I love tall ships - I remember them as a kid during the bicentennial celebration - My parents took me to see them on the Hudson!

William, what a treat this must have been to see these fine ships in person.  I grew up by the North Sea and sail boats were a common sight but they still fascinate me every time.

William, your boat pictures took my breath away when I first saw them.  They are great and I've never even been considered a ship fan.  I am so glad that you have chosen Active Rain as a place to share your photography.

William - See that ship in your third picture, "The HMS Surprise"?  I think it would make a perfect place to hold my next pirate party!  I'm wondering who owns all those amazing ships?  You can't just put 'em on a trailer and park them in your garage:-)

While reading blogs yesterday, I couldn't help but think it would be neat to have the ability to be everywhere at once.  There is so much life, when experienced through the eyes of others around the country.  There's so many wonderful places to be!

A shame they didn't sail the Star of India.

Isn't the Californian the ship built on the beach near Harbor Island 25 years ago?
