I really need a shower (or bath)...helping a customer out

It's been a busy week for me...and it looks like the weekend will be busy too...helping out several customers w/ flooding from Irene.

I got a call from one of my customers in Croton-on-Hudson.  He is about to move into his new home, and we are set to refinish his floor next Saturday.  He has 3 different types of wood - oak, maple and old pine plank boards.  The contractor is doing a bunch of work there now and as it turns out there are a few pieces of hardwood missing.

So my customer wants those replaced (and it's important to know which species of pine and width) and he was now concerned that there might be other sections missing and/or damaged under the carpets.  My customer currently lives in NYC so he can't get out there and of course he doesn't know the type of wood (and it's not standard as it's over 100 yrs old).

So, I went there this Friday evening.  And, pulled back lots of carpet and carpet pad.  There was no AC so I'm hot, sticky, and dirty.  But, at least I know what's needed and I discovered some minor water damage to the wood on the first floor (which he didn't ask me to look at, but I figured I would anyway).  I can't tell if this was from Irene or if it happened at an earlier time.

I was definitely not dressed properly and I broke a few nails, but at least we can now get the extra wood in time and make sure the job meets his timeline. All of can think of now is how I can't wait to take a shower.

Debbie,

Wow, you really serve your customers. Can you really match old wood with new wood, even if you know exactly which it is?

I hate when that happens... the not A/C part... which reminds me I have clients tomorrow, I'm going to need to pack a water cooler.

Jon - When I can, I'm happy to help.

Usually, when people have oak, it's easy to do (as long as you match red oak w/ red or white oak w/ white and same grade e.g. select vs. No 1 vs No 2) \. After you refinish, it's usually close enough.  Even though the new wood may be a touch lighter, because wood has natural variation, it usually blends in.  Pine is a more challenging as a) many more species and it's aged more and this is the harder part...they are usually made in different widths now.  So, you often need to order a wider width and then mill it down.  In this case, anything will be better vs.the plywood that is there.  It won't be perfect, but it will be good enough.

Donna - I hope so.  It sounds like he already has someone to the future tile work for the bathrooms, but perhaps I can help him find the tile.
