A Tragic Start to the Labor Day Weekend on Oahu (Honolulu County) Hawaii | Safety FIRST!

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

Four soldiers stationed at Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa, Oahu (Honolulu County), Hawaii were able to walk out to Mokolii Island, best known as “Chinaman’s Hat”, during low tide yesterday at about 1pm. They decided to head back to Kuoloa Beach Park on the Windward side of Oahu during high tide and ran into trouble.

You can read more about the tragedy here:

Two dead after being swept away in waters near Chinaman's Hat

Though we are at risk of injury every day during our lifetime please take extra precautions when going on activities in the ocean or even hiking in our mountains.  The channel between Mokolii Island (Chinaman’s Hat) and Kualoa has very strong currents during the rising tide the currents can easily tire the best of swimmer’s.

Sally, you're right that we are all at risk all the time, but I think we have to be careful to assess the real dangers of the risks that we choose to take.  And what a loss of two young men who were so young.

Sally - What a terrible tragedy.  A friend of mine who was only 34 years old died tragically about a month ago when he went out on a sandbar and then the tide suddenly came in and he drowned from being towed under the current.   My thoughts and prayers are with the families of these two soldiers.

Sally

It's so sad to read stories like this that potentially could have been avoided. It's good of you to get the warning out so hopefully others can avoid these risks.

That is a crying shame. The application of common sense could have avoided this . . .

Sally, a couple of years ago I saw some kids wading into the surf at St. Simon's Island, Georgia.   I called out to them, and showed them the warning sign that the water would be 8 to 10 feet deep when the Tide came in.   They had no idea - they thanked me and came back to the beach.

I am sorry for the loss of the 2 young Soldiers in Hawaii.

That is so sad. These young men and women put their lives on the line every day for us just to die while enjoying the islands during time away from work. Are there any warning signs posted?

Very, very sad.  I lived in Lanikai for several years and drove from Kaneohe to Sunset often.  This is a sad story and highlights the dangers of nature that surrounds us

Sally - our thought and prayers go out to the families of these two young soldiers ..... Ocean tides can be very dangerous ..... any water that moves be it tides, currents or rivers needs to be treated with caution
