The adoption of QR Codes

Look at this image. Do you know what it is? If you don’t and we didn’t tell you, chances are you will know in the next 3-6 months.

Believe it or not there was a time when people were skeptical about cell phones. Why couldn’t you wait until you’re home? Even if you were in a hurry, one could always find  a pay phone. It was certainly just hype, only for tech-savvy people, right?…Then suddenly you can’t see the world without them.

These little futuristic squares called QR Codes are about to become part of your life big time. They have the ability to take you from a piece of paper right into a corner of the web that’s highly relevant in the context where it appears. You only need one thing, something that you have with you all the time: Your cellphone.

I agree, but the only thing that has to happen is that it must be made EXTREMELY EASY and quick.

Right now, it seems you have to fumble through finding whatever QR code app there is on your phone, initiate it, snap the photo, and go from there.

If the smart phones start having an actual "QR Button" on them, perhaps this will make the QR reading more convenient.

I've been using QR codes and tracking the results.  So far, for my area, I'm less than impressed by the clicks.

It all starts with the experience that we give homebuyers when they read the code. I'm afraid that most QR code campaigns that I see today and poorly done in most cases simply pointing to a website that's not mobile optimized.

As people are delighted with the experience of reading QR codes and get what they want, they will themselves place the QR reader in an accesible place. It's unlikely that phone manufacturers will make QR more accessible than it is. 

An upcoming technology (NFC) is going to make offline-to-online interactions much more simple: simply tap your phone to the "tag" and a website or app will launch automatically.

Also don't forget about email or sms as another way to connect your listings with mobile pages.

So far I ahven't had a single use for a QR code. Many agents don't know how or where to use them, many are not set up to work on mobile devices, many agents don't have smart phones, many buyers don't have smart phones, no one is going to stop on the side of the road and run over to a sign to scan a qr code ( unless they are an idiot), many only work with certain carriers,, etc. The idea that everyone is going to use them just because agents are using them is ridiculous. If I stop and pick up a flier for one of your listings and you have a QR cose on your flier, why would I scan a qr code to look on a small screen when I can just look at the info on the flier, or go to your web site which should be on your flier? They my have some use in some situations, but for the most part, they don't seem to interest the general public from what I've seen. They're being overhyped and oversold in my opinion.

Good uses of QR codes are:

  • Video Listings.
  • Instant sharing of property with friend.
  • Gather more twitter & facebook followers
Like any new technology the adoption cycle starts slow and exponentially increases (more on that here). Realtors shouldn't ignore mobile and QR Codes are a component of that.

Mike, We have definitely seen a dramatic increase on hits in our platform. The technology is becoming mainstream. I think the Real Estate industry was a bit ahead of the curve on this one and thus many Realtors got dissapointing results earlier on.
