Celebrate National Grandparents Day - in Rockland County, NY
Did you know that the first Sunday after Labor Day is Grandparents Day? I'm a grandmother of 25+ grandchildren and had no idea that there was a day honoring me.
Marian McQuade was the founder of National Grandparents Day. She and her husband the parents of 15 children and the grandparents of over 40, began a campaign to set aside a day for grandparents. She hoped the day would have a threefold purpose:
- To honor grandparents
- To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children.
- To help make children aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.
Through her efforts, Grandparents Day was declared a national holiday by President Jimmy Carter in 1978
Grandparents Day was meant to be a family day. Use it to create some of your own family traditions centered around the seniors in your family. Celebrate by holding a family reunion or just a family gathering promoting inter-generational interaction. Cash in on the wisdom, knowledge and history of those seniors in your life and promote a spirit of love and respect for your elders, in your children. There are many, many elderly not fortunate enough to have family nearby; if you can, why not adopt one as a foster grandparent and include them in your plans.
For those of you in Rockland County, you might want to join the Grandparents Day celebration at Clark Recreation Center. It's scheduled to take place on September 10, between 12:00 noon and 2:00 PM. There will be music and a whole host of fun activities is planned. (In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Ramapo Senior Center on Mayer Drive in Suffern.) Clark Recreation Cednter is located on Campbell Road in Suffern, NY.
Whatever you choose to do to celebrate the grands in your life, have a grand Grandparents Day!!
