WINDSOR WALK OF LIGHT - Windsor, CT

9/11 Commemoration / Memorial Ceremony

Illuminated walkway

Date:  September 11, 2011

Time:  7:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Location:  Windsor Town Green, Windsor, CT

On September 11, 2011, a community ceremony of remembrance and the Windsor Walk of Light will be held on the Windsor Town Green in front of the Windsor Town Hall.  This ceremony will be held to remember and honor all those who died in the terrorist attacks on this country which took place ten years ago on 9/11.

Following the short ceremony, you are invited to take a leisurely walk along the "Walk of Light".  As you walk along the sidewalks of the town green at dusk, your path will be illuminated by approximately 3,000 decorated paper luminary bags with glow sticks prepared by Windsor High School and Sage Park Middle School students and other Windsor residents. There is one bag for each of the 2976 people who lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and Flight 93.  Students researched the lives of these "fallen heroes" and custom designed each luminary bag with something of meaning representing the life of the one remembered on that bag.

September 11, 2001 was a tragic and historic event for this country with far-reaching effects and implications for this country as a whole and for many many of our citizens individually. It is estimated that 20% of all Americans knew someone who was hurt or killed in these attacks.  This is a great opportunity for parents to reflect on this event with their young children and to discuss with them what it is that makes a "hero".

Amazing to see stats again. Who knows what long term damage will be done that we can't quantify. Would like to see a list of all of the ways people have chosen to honor those affected.

I like the idea of the walk of light to remember those who lost their lives eleven years ago.  It seems like yesterday.
