What Exactly is 7.1 Surround Sound?

What exactly is 7.1 surround sound? The numbers that represent the quality and magnitude of surround sound are dedicated to the easy interpretation of the system you need. The idea is to introduce just enough sound into the room that you're seated in to be able to experience the audio effects as though you were there. This helps to increase the intensity of the visual and brings you farther into the experience.

If you consider the average room most of the time there is not a need to go higher than 5.1 surround sound. You don't want to over saturation the room with sound, either. Going too high in a room that is too small to support the acoustics is really not going to improve the quality of the sound system.

7.1 surround sound is equipped with a greater number of secondary speakers and requires additional placement to experience rich sound. Usually this type of speaker arrangement is appropriate for larger than average rooms or home theatres. The system typically comes with 7 speakers plus a subwoofer and those speakers are large enough and clear enough to enhance home movie theatre rooms. Subwoofers provide the extra deep bass sounds that are difficult to manage on the average two or three speaker set.

The three speakers in front project sound toward the back of the audience, helping everyone hear sound more clearly and distinctly. The subwoofer is generally placed off to the left but down in front to help the bass carry properly. Two speakers typically are then placed directly on either side of the audience area to enhance the sounds that are best heard directly in each ear. If you were to listen to only these two speakers there would be times when you only hear sound coming from one of them.

The final two speakers are usually found in the rear corners of the room to help pitch sound back at the audience. This helps increase clarity and reception. When you have excellent reception from the rear you find that you can hear everything perfectly. It's like when you're watching a non-surround standard TV and you turn the volume up. Right at that moment when you can hear clearly it becomes quite obvious. This is the job of the rear two speakers.

7.1 surround sound is a serious system. It's recommended that you speak to a professional in audio services before you commit to a system of this magnitude. If you have the space and depth for the system, the audio will truly be a new dimension for you.

Seven speakers (tweeters) plus one bass unit.  Also known as "Overkill".  I remember growing up and having 1.0 sound.  One tv, one speaker, and glad to get the rabbit ears working to get the Yanks / Sox game!

Thanks for clearing that up, just one of those things that you really don't know and are afraid to ask or don't have time to ask.
