Um, the Answer Would be "No."

Last week I wrote a blog post asking if the local media and politicians overdid the warnings about Tropical Storm Irene. My concern was that, in light of the area being relatively spared, future warnings might not be taken as seriously. It turns out that the answer to my question would be "no," as in they didn't overdo it. Much as I disliked the schoolgirl-like giddiness of some of the weather reporters (which is a trend that will probably never go away), the aftermath of the storm has revealed enormous damage right here in our own back yard.

  • President Obama was just in Paterson, New Jersey, less than an hour from me, because the flooding was so severe.
  • Power outages in Westchester were significant, and some were without electricity for days.
  • Westchester also had plenty of flooding, including a a home that is under contract with some clients of ours. The basement was so flooded that the laundry appliances were floating.
  • The flooding wasn't just in basements. Last Sunday I published photos of standing water in Thornwood, NY which turned a main road into a lake, and a garage that was almost washed away by a brook that overflowed.
  • Tannersville, New York in the nearby Catskills had its downtown literally washed out. The main street was a river.
And right down the street from my own office, the subterranean erosion was so massive that a portion of North State Road collapsed. It is just a big hole. Worse, the area of the sinkhole housed utility infrastructure that will be no picnic to repair. Estimates are that it will take 2 months and almost $400,000 to fix and restore the road. This is a well traveled road that crosses the 9A expressway, and the disruption will be as significant as the cost.

So, to answer my own question, NO. It wasn't overdone, even in an area that was largely spared the massive damage we saw elsewhere. And I do believe that people will listen next time, or pay heavy consequences, especially if we aren't as fortunate as we were this time around.

It depends on which weather "expert" you hear or watch.  Most had the storm on the wrong track.  It wasn't an Atlantic Storm once it cam ashore.  It was an East Coast Storm and we know from history the danger they can wreck.

I rely on Joe Bastardi, since I've been listening to him for years.  He's dead on when it comes to hurricanes.

He predicted just the catastrophe that occurred.  He was pooh-poohed by the media and others.

He was SPOT ON predicting the devastation of that storm, rain, inland flooding, etc.

Just because the wind isn't 140 mph, doesn't mean there is no danger.

True Lenn, what hurt us wasn't wind. It was the rain. The drainage for all this development over the years is not adequate. Not by a longshot.

Philip looks pretty bad, our area was pretty lucky, but the more your hear from people the less you realize that this was not overblown. Lets hope that we can get the funding to make all these repairs without a lot of political posturing.

Hey Phil - I'll see you in a bit...you'll have to tell me where that hole is...I have to go there on Thurs and I have 2 routes I can take to Tuscan Grille.

Oh, and yes, some areas here got hit really hard.  And, yes, it was the water, not the wind, as usual, that causes the majority of the damage.  We keep getting calls...and I'm not even sure who to refer them to now since all the restoration companies are booed out for a week. Now, the calls are no longer about water, but about mold.

There's actually a guy with the last name Bastardi?!?

Anyway, water is a very powerful source of damage.  The storm might not have done the damage itself but the water left behind, and the flooding . . . now that's the problem.  The reporters can be a little over the top during the event, but in it's wake . . . there's an entirely new set reporting going on, i.e., about the damage.

I think we have a lot to learn for all this.. Many people thought we over reacted but I think it was best to be prepared just in case storm got worst. Now, since the storm I have an emergency kit in place in case we have something like this occur again.

Hear, hear, Phillip!  I'm glad the coverage was as extensive as it was.  It undoubtedly saved many lives.

I often think that as well, that sometimes the Media makes too much of something. And when it turns out that the storm or damage was not as bad as what they 'thought' it may be, then its a joke. Hopefully people will always take them seriously. Better to be safe than sorry.

I don't think it was overdone at all.  There is so much damage and flooding up here right now it is like the storm happened yesterday.  The recuperation will be going on for a long time to come.
