As our country continues to remember all the grandparents, parents, siblings, and hero’s that lost their lives on the tragic day of September 11, 2001. The phrase, “WE Will Never Forget” lives on. This week Volunteer Opportunities are available for the “9-11 Memorial Healing Field” at Tempe Town Lake.
Thank you in advance for your participation in this week’s Healing Field.
The following dates and times are open to all volunteers.
Friday September 9th ‘Set up’ day:
Beginning at 6:00 a.m. We expect to finish earlier than 11:00 again this year as we did last year thanks to all of our volunteers!
Set up is in 6 phases:
1-Rebar distribution and pounding in. The field will be laid out in a grid with white dots lining the field. Volunteers will place a piece of rebar on each dot, 2,996 to be exact. We have 5 rebar pounding hammers designed specifically for our purpose. This is the most labor intensive part of set up day and the biggest need for work gloves. Rebar pounders will take shifts, don’t try to do it all as I did my first year. J
2 – Flag Staging - Crew to un-furl flags from the trailers and hand to volunteers.
3 – Flag deployment – Volunteers to take flags from staging crew and place over rebar. Flags are 8’ tall and are not very heavy, most carry two or three per trip. Remember, flags are not to touch the ground and should be treated with honor and respect.
4- Yellow and Blue Ribbon – Volunteers to tie either Yellow or Blue Ribbons on specific flags. Yellow to signify 1st Responders and Blue to signify Flight crews. We will have a ‘crew’ leader for this phase to let volunteers know where to tie ribbons.
5 – Name Card deployment – This is the most time consuming part as we lay the field out in a very specific manner. Both by location and alphabetically. We can only begin this phase once the flags are all up, again, we will have a ‘crew’ leader for volunteers on site to ensure accuracy. The reason that this is such an important phase is we typically have hundreds of loved ones come in search of specific names.
6 – Military Boot deployment – We honor the victims from the Pentagon by placing a pair of military boots at the base of each flag.
Please make sure you bring work gloves if you plan on helping with the rebar. The weather will be hot and sunny so we encourage you to take precautions, sun block, hat, and plenty of fluids. Tempe Exchange will have water for volunteers but if you wish to have anything else, make sure you come prepared.
Monday morning September 12th beginning at 7:00am, Volunteers needed to reverse the above process and help unload at storage for next year’s memorial. If you would like to come earlier (5:00a.m), let me know as we will begin removing the cards early, this phase needs to be done in a very orderly fashion as to keep the cards in order.
Sunday morning September 11th at 7:00 am. Volunteers needed to read the names of the victims. This process will take approximately 4 hours. Each volunteer will read 10 names. Volunteers to read names are encouraged to read multiple times depending on the amount of people we have.
