Mays Counter Chicken and Waffles: Restaurants in Tucson
Mays Counter Chicken and Waffles had been on my mind for months. My rare visits "south" never availed me of the staple "soul food" item, and I was dying to know what I was missing. What was the allure of chicken and waffles?
I'm a home-made style of cook, and yes, I make waffles from scratch about every 4 or 5 months. (Well, they ARE fattening!) I rarely deep fry or "Sunday" fry a chicken breast, nor am a fan of Kentucky Fried Chicken, but I do appreciate a little what the Wisconsin side of me knows as "broasted chicken" now and then.
May's Counter offers comfortable, casual decor - the kind that reminds me of college sports bar. You don't have to dress up to dine, just come as you are. And don't worry, the prices are comfortable as well.
The menu is on the wall when you walk in - or you can sit at a booth/table and let the wait staff bring you a menu. My husband and I decided to share "The Hen", which consisted of two chicken breasts and a 7-inch waffle. When they bring the plate, the warm, sweet and savory scent envelopes you.
My guess it was something about the "perfect" bite.
A little bite of crispy chicken atop a buttery, syrupy, fluffy waffle made its way to my mouth, quickly followed by another.
Mays Counter Chicken and Waffles is open until 10:00 pm Sunday through Thursday, open early at 8:00 a.m. on weekends with a Friday and Saturday night close of 11:00 p.m.
Yes, there is more than chicken and waffles on the menu, so be sure and stop in at Mays Counter Chicken and Waffles. Ask about the dessert list - there might be a cobbler with your name on it.
I don't know if I'm a convert to the charisma of Chicken and Waffles, but I do recommend you go and form your own opinion. It's good, juicy chicken...and the waffles are light and slightly sweet.
My favorite part of our visit was the waitress. We explained as we were being seated that we really haven't eaten much fried chicken... She flashed a brilliant smile at us and return and said,
"That's okay! We won't hold it against you!"
