Praise from a Professional Photographer

I was at the Bell Street Gallery on Madeline Island last weekend, shooting a few photos at one of Steve and Mary McHugh's gallery openings.  I brought along a camera and a new lens that I've been experimenting with.  The results turned out to be fun and interesting.  Here are a few samples:

The images are ultrawide and crisp, nearly 180 degree views.  You just can't get results like these from most conventional ultrawide lenses. [Photo courtesy of Madeline Island Realty]

The Canon 15mm Fisheye lens lets you stuff a lot of view into a single frame.  I'm told that Canon has discontinued this lens, which is really too bad.  You'll need DxO Optics Pro software to uncompress and rectify the raw image to achieve a similar result.

Ultrawide lenses are fabulous for real estate photography and this one is a standout. Images are sharp from edge to edge and it's fast (f2.8).  I have a feeling this lens is going to get a lot of use in our office.

I sent copies of some of these shots to Steve, and he emailed me, "LOVE THEM, hope you don't mind me dropping a couple on Facebook".

It's a pretty awesome feeling to receive praise from a pro photographer like Steve McHugh.

Eric - great photos. It is so nice to get the whole room in the photo. I find small rooms especially hard to photograph. i will be buying a wide angle lens with my next digital camera. Thanks for sharing!

Donna, thanks!  The photos above were taken with a "fisheye" lens and then were rectified with DxO software.  It's an artsy effect that some find a bit surreal, but the panoramic view is impressive.  For a great wide angle lens, I'd recommend the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 zoom (if you're shooting Canon) or the Canon 17-40 f4 zoom.  The latter is slower and less expensive.  If you're shooting with a Nikon, the 14-24mm f2.8 is an awesome lens, but it's a big-buck purchase.  And all of the above will only give you the results you want if you're using a camera body with a full-frame sensor.
