La Luz Trail an Oxygen Thin Experience

La Luz Trail Head

For many hiking the La Luz Trail can be an Oxygen Thin Experience.

Hiking in New Mexico and around Albuquerque is a favorite activity for many including us.  We have explored most of the popular hikes and some not so popular.  New Mexico has such a diverse landscape from sand dunes to high mountains that it’s easy to find a great trail almost anytime of year.  The Sandia Mountain area alone offers over 50 trail options.

One of the most famous Sandia Mountain trails is the La Luz (Spanish for “the light”). This 7.5 mile one way hike starts at an elevation of 7,050’ ending at 10,378’, this is a 3775’ vertical gain! I can tell you from experience the La Luz Trail is an Oxygen Thin Experience.  The trail is rated difficult but the reward is worth it.

The La Luz trail introduces you to just how immense the Sandia Mountains really are.  The mountain is almost entirely granite and the enormity of the boulders, cliffs and spires are impressive. One of the more difficult parts of the hike is "Rockslide" which is a huge granite field of tumbled boulders some bigger than cars.  It requires fifteen switchbacks just to get through this enormous section of trail.

Because of the major elevation gain you actually trek through 4 different life zones.  The vegetation ranges from scrub oaks, pinon, ponderosa, douglas fir, aspen, engleman spruce and fur.  The views from all along this trek are spectacular but the panoramic scene at the 10,250’ top is extraordinary.  On a clear day you can see 11,000 square miles of the Rio Grande Valley and New Mexico.

Once at the top you can choose to return the same way you came or take the easy way down via the Sandia Tram, which is worlds longest Tram. We opted on the Tram ride and enjoyed the 15 minute ride back down. We love living here in the High Desert of Albuquerque and would be happy to show you around our wonderful city. Get your backpack ready and come enjoy the incredible view from the La Luz Trail an Oxygen Thin Experience.

Glad you can still do the hikes. I know I wouldn't make it that far eveif it wasn't a 3700'+ climb.

Buenos dias John-nice vid man. I especially liked the tram ride back down! Sort of reminds me of my hiking trails in my backyard in San Miguel de Allende-minus most of the pine trees:)

Hi Judy,  You are right, thin air but a full experience for sure.  Thanks for the nod on the video but I know I have a long way to go in getting it right.  Yours are awesome!

Perfect music to set the stage for your slide show presentation. Nicely done.  Now, start doing a little video and add it to the mix...you can do it!

Good length, beautiful pictures...and again, perfect music!  Bravo, I love it when people get those three aforementioned items right...it's the only way folks are going to really watch our slide shows or videos. They must be entertaining and not cost people too much time.

Nice job with the branding too. :)

Debb,  Thank you so much for the kudos and the kind suggestions.  I knew I needed some video to mix with my stills but this was a past hike and video wasn't on my mind at the time.  You produce some great video and of course blogs.  Your input is an inspiration and very much appreciated.  Regards from the Q!

Hi John - Nice video, awesome hike. We have a couple of hikes up in Rocky Mountain National Park that we do every year that are pretty challenging and I really hate it when those trail runners go by and they're not even breathing hard.

Hi Dick,  I have had the good pleasure of hiking/camping in the Rocky Mountain National Park.  What a gorgeous place, I have some fantastic photo of Elk staring me down.  Yeah those trail runners are a different breed for sure.  Got to get to Colorado soon, have a buddy wanting me to go climb a fourteeners Uncompahgre Peak.

I'd love to hike some of those trails.  However, the high elevations would probably give me a problem.

Have a great day and an outstanding weekend.  Be sure to have your camera in hand to capture the special moments.

 Life is good!

Very nice video presentation, John. I would love to hike some of those trails but I would need to start smaller, I think :)
