I Remember Every Moment of 9-11-01....Even 10 Years Later

I remember seeing this scene....the beautiful skyline of New York as it might have appeared September 10, 2001. Little did we know that anyone enjoying this early fall view would be seeing it for the last time.

My 16-year old son came in that morning and woke me up with "mom, a plane has flown into the World Trade Center." He was up early for the bus to school and watched the news while he ate his breakfast. I assumed it was a small private plane and rolled over. "That's too bad honey."

Shortly after, he came up and urgently said "MOM.....another plane has hit the other Tower....YOU NEED TO GET UP"!!!!! I did.

By the time I got downstairs the Pentagon was also hit. I ran upstairs to wake my husband "WAKE UP, THE UNITED STATES IS UNDER ATTACK"!!!

Fighting tears, I woke up my mom and tried to calm my stepchildren's mom. Driving kids to school I heard the towers were falling. Driving home I heard that Flight 93 had crashed.

I was glued to the TV. I cried, I feared, I prayed. I cheered anytime someone's loved one was found safe. I wondered if now everything was different. It was....my children had just lost the America that I grew up with. The one that was safely positioned half a world away from danger.

Now, 10 years later.....I realize that most of my children see this as just part of their lives. Almost a moment in history and not something they lived and felt that day. But for me....I remember every moment.

Karen  - I remember that day so well.  Fear and confusion consumed me - how could this happen?  But, it did.

I remember that day as it is our anniversary ! We now celebrate the day before. I worked 2 blocks from the trade center know 2 people who died there. Also have had some Wall street friends come down with strange cancers 10 years later. Now we are learning about how this tragedy extends itself. I am a volunteer fire fighter here in North Georgia as part of my way of giving back to the community I live in. So we will be holding vigils at our stations on 9 11

I often think of the young of today. What have they known those 16 and up? 9/11, Two never ending wars. A recession followed by a near depression. Survivors of the Great Depression and European survivors of Word War II carried a burden of insecurity all their lives. Is this what is ahead for todays young?

I was a wreck for one month after.  Just jittery constantly.  That day was unreal.  Like your son told you about the first plane, my husband called me as he heard it on the news and wanted me to look into it.  He's a private pilot (recreational) and was wondering what conditions would cause such an accident.   I was watching the TV when the second plane hit.  I was speechless.  When the Pentagon was hit it was too close for comfort, but I had to get showered and get to work.

Karen, I have watched some of the specials on TV.  These ones focus on the survivors and are inspiring.  This is a day the world will never forget.

Karen,  I think that many of us thought there might not be a 10 year anniversary!  Particularly with the other things that happened after  --  anthrax scares, etc.  We are reminded of it everytime we pass through security at the airport.  Our innocence as a nation is gone forever.

Pam: I couldn't believe it either...the pictures were just horrible

Charlie: I'm sorry....we were fortunate not to know anyone personally, but moved nonetheless

Jim: noone will!

Maya: I think so.....and they have to be diligent

Chris Ann: I can't believe you could go to work, I just sat and watched all day

Chris: I've watched them too...and of course we will all survive and thrive...but it was a toll

Marge: I am shocked that we didn't get more and more attacks. So impressed with our government to keep us safe at least.

Karen - I too remember it well and was watching tv of the first attack when the second attack happened right before me.  I was dumbfounded!  As a child, I could never understand those who talked about the day JFK died (before my time) and remembered what they were doing.  Now I know.  I will always remember that day.  I will never forget how I cried for those that died.

I believe everyone will remember exactly where they were for the rest of their lives.  I remember we got the news because our phone started ringing off the hook with our east coast family and friends calling to see if my husband was going to be activated.  Stunned we turned on the tv just in time to see the second plane hit.  I was glued to the tv for a week.  Makes me tear up thinking about the emotions even today.  May God bless us all.

I remember every moment as well...including the fact that my dad was NOT in his midtown office and had a meeting downtown.  None of the cell phones worked here for hours...or almost none.  Somehow my sister-in-law from London got in touch w/ me but she was the only one and we couldn't reach the rest of the family.  I remember fighter planes going above too and that god awful smoke cloud I could see even from my apartment.

Oh, and then I felt for a bit yrs later I was reliving it when there was a big explosion in the subway.  And, I was fearful everyday in Grand Central.  I had to just get out of working in NYC.  Too much fear.  I still can't look up Downtown.

Karen I remember like it was yesterday. There was no chance I could have gone to the office - not one. I like you was glued to the news - in utter dismay and worry over all those people, our country, everything.  I walked around like a zombie - as did almost all others. Aimlessly going through chores that needed to be done.  After a few weeks our baseball team was in the world series with new york. Every night at 4:00 a ton of our friends would gather at our house to watch the game as one.  We needed to be with each other.  It was the most strange time I ever remember.  Today I saw a segment on the children of 9/11 then and now....that touched by heart and made me cry. God Bless America.

Donne: I remember people saying that also about JFK and you're right....now I understand

Tracy: I'm fighting tears today also..and I'm sure through the weekend.

Debbie: I was feeling it in California, can't begin to imagine what it felt like in NY

Anna: I know I always loved this country, but that day....I truly felt it, deeply

Karen, you've written a lovely and moving post that brings tears to my eyes.

I left my little kids at school that morning, a decision that their dad (now my ex) and I argued over. He thought they were safer in a school building then here in town. I wanted them with me.

What a terrible day for everyone who experienced it, some so much more devastated than others.

Leslie: Thank you....I sent my kids to school because first, I didn't think that our schools were in any danger and second, I felt they could mourn better with their friends and teachers. More people around them to share grief and fear with. I sent my kindergarten child because I knew they would NOT be talking about it and it would be better for him than to watch his mom cry all day. That was my reasoning....but certainly anyone thinking the exact opposite is also right. There were no right answers that day.

I will never forget that day either. I was approaching the Golden Gate Bridge (asleep) when it happened. Cell phones started going off like crazy on the bus. A crazy and surreal day full of tears and fright.

I remember this event too, our family was out of town on a vacation, we were preparing to leave and go home, but got stuck.  Many, many people turned to their faith in God which they had previously neglected.  It was a wake-up call for all of us.
