Its National Waffle Week!
National Waffle Week runs from Sept. 4 – 10th. Waffles date back to Ancient Greece when the Athenians cooked obelios – flat cakes cooked between hot metal plates. The Pilgrims brought waffles to America in 1620 and were mostly served hot with maple syrup.
Waffles became so popular that it’s rumored Thomas Jefferson was famous for his “Waffle Parties” at the White House where he served waffles prepared on a waffle iron he purchased in France.
Who doesn’t love waffles? In my quest for fun and innovative food I discovered what I believe to be the perfect waffle at Bruxie Gourmet Waffle Sandwiches located just off the Circle Of Orange. It’s the perfect place to indulge in savory waffle sandwiches like the Pulled Pork, BBQ Sandwich with cider coleslaw and homemade BBQ sauce, or the Chicken Waffle Sandwich with sweet honey chili sauce. If you want to indulge your sweet tooth, I highly recommend the Lemon Meringue Waffle, stuffed with lemon curd and fresh cream.
