Have you Lost Your Mojo?

By

Urban Dictionary defines mojo as charm or talent. This word stuck in my grey matter when I saw the the funny movie whose title I could not capture right now.. Ahh. Memory lapse. Time is a passing and so is my age.

In my lingo, I referred to it as the ultimate drive or dynamism. When I started to plunge in the real estate business, I was full of force that nothing seemed to stop me from prospecting expired and for sale by owner listings. I would put together a material with fervent ardor and dropped them off by the prospects' doors. I would drive around the streets and roads sticking postcards and customized printed ads about myself. Yes, I was unstoppable.

My efforts paid off when I got my first waterfront listing followed by a former for sale by owner... and then an expired listing after only three months of persistence. That was in 2006. My business grew exponentially after two and a half years. And then the mortgage and housing meltdown in the middle of 2008 hit us like a truck on our chest, taking the last breath of our existence..almost.  My enthusiasm dwindled with the market.

Now, I am trying to add sparkle again to my soporific career. Luckily, I found Active Rain whose members look all revved up and in overdrive. Tell me fellow members, has there been a point in your real estate career when you feel the lack of luster?

When you go from selling your entire inventory and constantly getting new inventory to almost a stand still, you really start to wonder if you lost your mojo!  Your inventory is now overcrowded, people think the economy doesnt apply to them and they want you to work miracles for them.  Also people that only spoke kindly to you are now talking "down to you" and trying to tell you how to do your job.  It can really hit you hard.  I have picked myself up and dusted myself off many times.  It comes down to the fact that at the end of the day I know Im doing all I can, I know I still really care about helping people, and I am willing to keep a transaction together with pit bull tenacity.  I understand the importance of handling peoples largest investment and I remain professional when others would go postal.  Therefore, I know Im doing all I can do to make it work and as long as I can honestly say those things, I know that I havent lost my mojo.

When you start to make excuses for poor performance instead of making a better game plan........and you start to give it less effort instead of working harder...........when you start to think it doesnt matter anymore instead of thinking it matters more than ever now..........then you may have lost your mojo.  Its work to keep that mojo going!!!

Maria, I think we all go through periods in our lives where we aren't as excited and motivated about various things as we once were.  It has been hard to stay on top of the real estate market with so much doom and gloom over the past few years.  But you are on the right track!  The people here on Active Rain are knowledgeable and motivational!  It is the best way to stay my day now.  Reading what others have achieved makes me work harder to achieve my own success.  Good luck!

This is good. It reminds of a part in a song that says "I had someone tell  me i fell off, oh i needed it that" meaning that we all need to keep our mojo and stay focused so we can be successful!

Great post, Maria - very thought-provoking.  I think everyone gets to that point at one time or another. When you don't want to continue. When you just want to quit. But like you said (and Teresa), you just have to push on. Get back to the things you did before that helped you become successful in the first place and then you'll start feeling the tingle of success again!

It can feel a roller coaster ride. But a good, productive agent doesn't feel, s/he does!!!

Hello Emcee.. I do appreciate the warm comment and the excellent input. I do have to sing sometimes this old song by Barry M. "I made it through the rain.":)

Hi Loreena, it is a delight to see your face here. I would like to special mention the help you extended to me when I was struggling with the blog's control panel. Thank you for the quick responses and for taking the time to teach me despite your hectic schedule. You are quite a sparkling rainmaker.

The old mojo comes and goes.  I've kind of gotten use to it by now (at least the comings and goings of my blogging mojo that is).
