Where were You on 09/11/2001?

I've tried to avoid writing a post on this subject. There are so many who have, and probably much more eloquently than I ever could. But after watching the day's events of the tenth anniversary on msnbc.com, I think it's a cathartic reaction. THIS HAS TO BE SAID.

Where were you on 9/11I woke up to my clock radio at 6:30AM Pacific time. The first thing I heard in my first recollections of the day was the news that both World Trade Center towers had been hit by airplanes. Lying there in bed, not quite awake, my first thought was "Oh come on. This can't be real."

I usually take a shower first thing to wake up, but on this day I turned on the TV in the living room, and was totally awed by what I saw unfolding. The networks were replaying the first impacts. This was before the other attack on the Pentagon and before the news of flight 93, and before both towers came tumbling down. I was watching it all live, as it happened.

I ran back and told my partner what was happening, this couldn't be real. The news was speculating about other attacks across the US, especially on national landmarks, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, downtown San Francisco and others.

We just sat watching the news unfold, as the other attacks unfolded. At some point, I decided I'd better get to work. I was working in downtown San Francisco at the time as an Architect. I rushed out of the house, took the subway downtown, and exited at Montgomery Station. Walking past One California, I looked up at the high-rise, and chills ran through me. The Streets were empty.

When I reached my office at KMD Architects, everyone was in a state of shock, and a little bit of fear. We didn't know what else might happen, and being shut off from the news on TV was a little disconcerting. The internet hadn't evolved yet in 2001 to the video coverage it has today.

I and many others decided to go back home to be with our loved ones. No business would be taken care of today. That's all I remember.....

This afternoon a number of jets have flown low over the area. I hear them roar.I find myself waiting, waiting to hear an explosion.

That is certainly a day that will live in our memories with perfect clarity and recall. When that second plane hit, it took a few seconds to realize it wasn't a replay of the first plane...that is when it became clear we were under sttack.

John, in 2001, I was an avid daytrader who had multiple monitors and news channels to help me with my trading. It was an emotional day as I watched firsthand the plane hit the tower, the graphic images, the news commentary and the buildings fall. It will be something I will never forget.

John, there was a point in the day, where I just couldn't function either. My boss knew how worried I was about my son, so cut me lose so I could call the one in Japan and make sure he was ok, and get the other one safely home from college. Such a horrible time in everyone's lives.

John thanks for sharing this post and your experience that day. My wife and I were in Vegas and received a call by my sister that morning about the Twin Towers. I remember turning on the news seeing the first plane hit and thought it may have been a mistake. After seeing the second plane hit, I knew there was no mistake, and this was a planned attack. I have never felt such a wave of emotion come over me after seeing this and all of Vegas was impacted the same way. The city that never sleeps was now quiet and in disbelief.

I was moving into my new condominium. The televisions and cable were not hooked up so I didn't know anything at all about what was going on. I didn't find out until we went out for lunch, we being me, the girlfriend, and our families. Now that everyone has smart phones....

Susan, Laura, Bill It was a day I'll never forget. One of maybe three or morein my life - you know, the kind where you remember every detail.

Karen, I don't think any of the rank and file stayed in the office that day.

Roger, yours was an amazing story. Yes, I've read it.

I think that is one of the strangest things about the day Alan. Everything was quiet. No one knew what to expect next.

Yeah Eric, the information age - it was a little different then.
