The 22nd annual Coastal Cleanup Day will be Saturday September 17, 2011

On Coastal Cleanup Day everyone in Los Angeles gets a chance to clear their streets and neighborhoods of debris. Let’s be realistic whatever people pickup anywhere, they will not end up in the ocean.

According to Heal the Bay, Coastal Cleanup Day volunteers around the world have collected more than 166 million pieces of debris over the past 27 years. On the one hand this is very commendable. Than on the other hand I cannot believe that people would throw that much debris just on the ground or in the sand. How sad, had the people that visit the beaches just tossed their garbage into the containers this figure would be a lot less… But I am digressing.

There are never enough Volunteers to do the Cleanup Day. So if you would like to do something good for your neighborhood or the environment, please sign up at   http://healtthe-bayccd.eventbrite.com There will be 60 sites this year including more than 20 inland locations. Hard to believe but they will even have SCUBA dive sites at Leo Carrillo State Beach, Redondo Beach and of course the Santa Monica Pier.

This year Ford Motor Company is one of the main sponsors and they will donate $50 to Heal the Bay for every test drive taken on their vehicles on display. Also as an added benefit anyone who tests drives their vehicle will be automatically entered for a chance to win a new econ-friendly Fords.

So with that said please Volunteer and Help the environment, and help keep your Beaches and the Community Litter Free. If you ever went to the beach and loved it, help us out. Thank you for your support.

This sounds like a wonderful community event!  Yes, it is a shame that there is that much trash to pick up, BUT so fantastic that it is getting removed!

What a smart idea. If everyone pitches in a little, it will make a huge difference.

Endre, you have highlighted a lot of great causes, but this is a terrific one.  Thank you for making everyone aware of how they can help keep the ocean from getting even more polluted.

Gina, I am with you on that for all the people that do not care about the beauty of their environment there are enough people who do and are in the process of rectifying one wrong with one right.

Love these kind of causes... as my aunt Mildred use to say, "many hands make the task small." Also, appreciate you posting about it... People do care, they will be there, and they will demonstrate it!

Rene, it is nice to see your optimism and it is needed both the "many hands" &  your optimism.

VB:) yes these are great events, as far as the car, you will notice that in Europe & on the West Coast Pastel Colors are in vs on the East Coast you see more conservative colors vs the bright yellows:))

Debra, I blame the upbringing, I remember as a child my parents thought me not to toss garbage on the ground rather put it in the trash containers.....
