My Reasons for Loving Real Estate

Title Company Delivery GirlMy first job out of high school was working for a local Title Company.  I started out as their "Delivery Girl", taking deliveries all over town, on foot, to real estate offices, Banks and the S & Ls (yes they really did exist in the sixties), Attorney offices and the like.  I loved this job and all of the people I came into contact with.  This was my first experience with real estate, one that has given me many fond memories that I carry with me to this day.

I married my high school sweetheart who just happened to be my employer's son, helped put him through Oregon State and when he graduated he went into real estate.  We had 2 daughters and lived in the town we both grew up in, Salem, Oregon.

We lived a good life, better than most young people our age, and were involved with many things besides real estate.  My husband was a City Councilor, successful, a people person and loved what he did, real estate.  I was busy with youngsters and being a soccer mom (although in those days we were not called that), PTA and much more.  I watched as my then husband helped people purchase homes and I listened to the stories he brought home, both from his civic duties and from real estate.

RealtorI first got into real estate in the mid 1970s, at that time we owned a Real Estate Training School and my husband taught people how to take the real estate exam as well as teaching for the NAR nationally.  When I passed the exam on the first try, I had a very surprised husband; this was my second entry into the world of real estate, only this time on a professional level.

Many years have passed, we are no longer married but remain good friends and we still exchange stories.  I love helping people get into homes and with first time buyers seeing the appreciation and excitement of their experience.  It is very humbling and always takes me back to the time we purchased our first home.  It puts this fast world into perspective and grounds me in a good way.

I love Real Estate for so many reasons, but the largest reason is that it feels so right to be in this profession called Real Estate. I meet wonderful people, have made good friends, my brain is working, and I am able to help people through stressful times, help them begin to create their own estates, and  make their lives fuller and more complete.

I know that times are not what we all would like them to be, but honestly when have they ever been all we like them to be.  It is just different, we adapt and we carry on living life no matter what.  I am truly blessed regardless of what has happened in my life, good, bad or indifferent. I am still Blessed and very thankful, after all I woke up this morning.  What more could a girl ask for.

I do love Real Estate and all it brings.

This is to all who read this post.

I apologize for the words that are in green, I did not do that and each time I tried to change the word, then a different green word would pop up.  I have not had this happen before, but I guess it is the wonderful world of technology.  So I don't know what will happen if you click on them.

What a nice insight into your background.  I love to teach and my first career right out of college was as a secondary school teacher.  In my mid 20s I got into real estate sales and now for 31 years have helped people in the real estate industry.  I still love to get in front of the room to train agents, a passion I take time to do on occasion.  Real Estate is a great career and it is obvious that you enjoy what you do!

I would think it would be especially rewarding to work with first time buyers.  So much excitement with that first home.  And I love your tag line - that you sell homes, not houses.  I think the most successful agents always remember that every buyer is looking for much more than square footage and so many bathrooms, they need that emotional connection with their new home.

Mary - I have ebbed and flowed with my love of real estate over the decades.  In the first years right after the millenium, I was burning the candle at both ends, while working at a software development company, and running a full time real estate career at the same time.  I was selling to the software developers at the company.  I was getting by on so little sleep that when the job at the company ended after 8 years, I was thoroughly exhausted.  That was in October of 2005, and the current housing market we now find ourselves in, began about that time.  I skated for a couple of years, and kind of regrouped.  I thought about retiring, but absolutely found it to be the worst 2 weeks of my life.  I have again found my cadence however.  and through it all, I never really fell out of love with real estate.  It has been my second husband for 30 years:-)

Thank you for sharing Mary. I followed my father into the real estate business, and we still work together (14 years for me). I do enjoy helping others in this business and also meet a lot of interesting people. All the best, Arpad

Good Morning Connie,

Thank you for sharing part of your background as well. I too love to teach, although I was never a school teacher.  I have though held classes for Office Products Stores teaching the general public filing systems when I worked in sales as a manufacturers rep in the office products industry.  As well when I was a massage therapist I taught massage related classes then I taught some watercolor art classes for one of the local high schools.  That was a real eye opener but I really enjoyed it.   I do love teaching as well, but somehow Real Estate has always kept its hold on me.  There may be a time when I again teach Watercolor Classes to those who would like to learn painting techniques as well as working in Real Estate.

Good Morning Susan,

It is very rewarding, I like working with all kinds of buyers and sellers but somehow those first time buyers have an excitement that others lose over time.  Thank you for the comment on my tag line.  I had a little help with that as it was suggested to me by Richie Naggar right here on Active Rain.  Brilliant it was.

Good Morning Myrl,

Your story is really interesting and I know there is more.  Sometimes we do skate a little through the times, I know this is what I have done for the last couple of years as well with lots going on at home and raising a Granddaughter to boot.  Now that she is back living with her mom, it is easier and I am not ferrying her around as I was so I have more time.  I am working to regroup and change my focus.  I thought it would be easy and I can safely say, it is not being so easy for me.  However, I know that this is only temporary.  I am tenacious if nothing else and temporary it will be.  I hope your week is smooth and easy.

Good Morning Arpad,

When I worked at the Title Company all those years ago, my Father-In-Law took me under his wing and taught me many things which are so valuable to me today.  My oldest daughter has expressed interest in going into Real Estate and if she decides to do so, I would love to partner in what ever way she wants with her.  It would be extraordinary.  thank you so much for commenting.  It is appreciated.

Mary, first off, I love your storytelling. It was easy to read and I was right there with you. I also love the whole look of your blog--the fall leaves--my favorite colors!

Now, what you wrote is just how I feel. I haven't been in it nearly as long as you, but it's been in my blood for alotta years. And so true! I am really happy that I got to meet you (AND see your new haircut!)

feels so right to be in this profession called Real Estate.

Good Morning Ms. Gayle,

The leaves you see in my blog are from a Sugar Maple in my front yard last autumn.  This tree is one we planted shortly after our Black Lab Dory passed away several years ago, it is in memory of her.  It was her favorite place to lay in the yard.

I do feel this way regarding Real Estate, it has also been in my blood since I was in my very early twenties. I too am so happy to meet you, I am sure it will happen again soon, perhaps we can put together something over the holiday season.  I hope your weekend brings you many rewards.

Mary

Such a great story Mary... I love RE too. I also passed on my first go around on the test. I was so surprised! Greater Realtors® than I had to take it many times.

Hi Sussie,

Thank you for the compliment, I knew many people who had to take the test two or three times, and I was surprised when I passed but I ws determined.  My husband at the time was also very surprised.  Never pays to be underestimated does it.  Have a good weekend Sussie.
