Where is it Wednesday...somewhere in Newberg, OR  9/14/11

Congrats to John McCarthy for correctly guessing last weeks post Willamette Primary School, answer to Where is it Wednesday...somewhere in West Linn, OR 9/7/11

Each week I'll be posting a new picture on Wednesday morning. The title of the blog will have the City where the picture is taken and I'll post the answer Wednesday evening...not only here on my blog, but on facebook business page (please click like and add yourself there) as well as tweetin it on my Twitter page.

Do you know where it is? Care to guess? Comments are welcome! I'll post the answer tonight.

Hint: A great way to help people get home!

Habitat for Humanity ReStore, answer to Where is it Wednesday, Newberg OR 9/14/11

John is correct and thanks for putting in what that structure is..It was driving me crazy not knowing what it was called!

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore located in the quonset hut at 301 N Main St. in Newberg has donated reusable items such as lighting, doors, sinks, appliances, and furniture,to name a few. The day I was here there was even some nice pieces of art. From the E-newletter:

"ReStore resale outlets sell reusable and surplus building materials to the public. ReStore also accepts donated goods which are sold to the general public at a fraction of the retail price. The proceeds help Newberg Area Habitat fund the construction of Habitat homes within our community. ReStore provides an environmentally and socially responsible way to keep good, reusable materials out of the waste stream while providing funding for Habitat’s community improvement work."

Each year I donate to Habitat for Humanity as there is nothing like helping people get into a first home that thought it would never be possible. This was my first trip into a ReStore and I now will be checking them out more often. This is the link for info on all the locations in Portland. Here are a few pics from my visit.

Below are some light fixtures that can easily be updated with some spray paint. I can easily see the colorful one for used for outdoors. Kinda cool!

Hi Cindy,

No worries about your tires here. The management of this establishment, I'm sure, cares as much about your tires as they truly care for the people who donate there and shop there. Kat, you still there?

Hi Cindy & Kat,

Its now time for the moment of truth.

The quonset hut in the photo is actually located at 301 North Main Street in Newberg, OR. This place was opened up last year by Dave Bartlett and is called the ReStore. It is managed by Habitat for Humanity, one of my favorite non-profits. Contractors and homeowners can donate used building materials to the ReStore who then price these materials for resale to the general public. The person making the donation can take a tax deduction for value of the donation and the ReStore can offer these materials well below market value. I have both donated materials and bought items from the ReStore in Dover, NH. In lieu of the landfill, these materials can have a second life and help people who may be in need.

Cindy, sure hope everything is okay with your mother-in-law.  Certainly will be thinking about you and your family!

Hey John...man, don't know how you do it! Thank you for giving me the name of what that type of building is called..it was driving me crazy! You got this one DOWN! I love the whole premise of this type of store. ReUse, ReCycle and give. It not only is great for the environment, but really great for helping those that might not be able to get into a home do so. Win/Win all around in my book!

Thanks for asking about MIL..we'll know more next week. Fingers crossed

Hi Cindy,

"Newberg OR quonset hut" was the basis of the Google search :-) Found there were several businesses that operated over the years in quonset huts in Newberg, "the brick making capital of Oregon."  Anyway, sure hope the rest of your week goes great!

Hi John, I kept putting in "curved metal buildings", or "older metal buildings in Newberg" as a search..but nada. I figured if someone knew what that was called it would be easier to search. Hey..congrats on hitting and passing that 100K point milestone! I just noticed your nice black box under your pic!

Hi Jill, thanks! They always remind me of the 50's for some reason. There is another one currently being used as a boutique not to far from this one.

I finally got a chance to stop by and see what the answer was.  John, THAT's what the building is called.  I knew that but didn't know I knew it until I saw John's answer.

I can't wait for next week!

I just like this feature so much Cindy. I come back each time to see the answers - how fun - used to see alot of those metal buildings in the interior of Alaska - probably cheaper than stick construction.

Hi Debb, Thanks! After googling quonset huts, it did say that many were found in Alaska. Did you live in Alaska? If not cheaper, at least easier to put up than stick built. How's that hand of yours? I so hope it's not giving you too much pain!

Well Cindy,

Congrats to you for passing the 200K mark! Writing to you from sunny Pompano Beach, FLA. We came down here yesterday for Chris' son Eric's engagement party. The wedding is May 4th. I am curious about the stats for this WIIW and hoping the fb posts brought more people to look. Hope you enjoy the weekend!
