Sunflowers in Michigan

By

One of the most amazing flowers that exists is the sunflower.  It is actually my favorite of all flowers.  Many people have the misunderstanding that they are called 'sunflowers' because they resemble the sun.  This is not the case.  They are called sunflowers because they follow the sun throughout the day from sunrise to sunset.

I was recently visiting a winery in Northwest Michigan and near the entrance to the vineyard fields was a field of sunflowers.  All of their faces were pointed in the direction of the sun.  So I took a few photos to show the uniformity of them.  It is really quite amazing to see a field of these flowers, and see them all pointing in the same direction.  It was a slightly overcast day at the time, but there was no question as to which direction the sun was if you look at these guys.

Michael,

These are wonderful shots of the sunflowers.  There is a reason why they are called sunflowers.  In Italian the name for sunflower is girasole, which litterally means turns to the sun.  A

Hello Michael, What an interesting fact about sunflowers. I will be sure to look closer next time I see them in a field.

Thanks for your comments everyone.  Sunflowers are something I have hard time not stopping to take photos of when I have my camera handy.

Sunflower fields are so beautiful! Steve, Don't plant too close to your house, they attract both bees and ants!! I made that mistake only once! Beautiful - Michael, thanks for sharing !
