Tasmanian Devil? Butterfly?

Tattoos make a daily apperance on our baristas, co-workers, pirates and friends.  They're everywhere from ankles, shoulders and even on the inside of some's lips.  Seems like more people in the room have a tattoo than don't.

Do you have a tattoo?  If so, do you try to ever hide it?

I don't have one, but I always wanted one.  My cousin and I went to get tatoos when we were teenagers (in the 70's).  I let her go first so you can see now why I don't have one.

No tattoos here and no intention of ever trying to get one.  They IMHO detract from a professional's look when visible.

Meh, never really considered it. What symbol would I want to carry with me the rest of my life?

In response to Stacey's comment, I drive a Hyundai and wouldn't put a bumper sticker on it and it's 7 years old so no desire to ever get a tattoo.

I have a few.... but I always wear my shortest sleeved dress shirt to my original schedule so that any work is ALWAYS hidden when I am "on the clock"....  Even family members are shocked to find that I have a HUGE celtic cross on my upper arm...from 10 years ago!

Seems to be more and more acceptable, but I prefer to keep my tattoos private

I do have tattoos, and not only that, my husband is a tattoo artist. We own one of the nicest studios in Tennessee. In general I dress so that my tattoos do not show. However, if someone judged me because of it, I'd rather not work with them anyway.  Many of my clients are tattooed people who prefer to work with an agent who will not judge them. (And many of them ask for tattoos as closing gifts). Over 50% of younger people have tattoos.

I would like to comment on some of the other comments above:

1.) Those old faded blue/green tattoos were done back when ink and techniques had a long way to go.  (many times those are WW2 era tattoos.) Tattoos that are well done do not end up looking like that. Tattoo artists are just like painters. Find a really good one with a distinctive style that you like. (preferably with lots of awards and magazine publications too).

2.) When you are old and everything is droopy, the tattoo will be the least of your worries.  :)

3.) Barb- I've seen Dr. /Dentist office's that are not nearly as clean as our studio. We've never had anything but a perfect health inspection score in the past 10 years.  Most doc's offices aren't inspected at all, and I commonly see cross contamination practices at their offices which puts my teeth on edge.

They generally do not bother me, but I also don't see much need for them, except for some people who used them to get permanent eyebrows after an illness. Saw an interesting article recently that some massively color tattooed people are subtly communicating an abundance of wealth - I often think of that when showing houses.

I have a comment that goes towards your first sentence, where you mention baristas. My daughter has a tattoo that can't be hidden as it goes down her arm clear to the knuckles of her hand. She can't get a job at Starbucks because of it. STARBUCKS!!  So, I'd say the perception that tattoes are either unprofessional, or 'unclean' or just off-putting is still pretty strong. I don't feel that way, I'm fine with them, but they certainly don't strengthen a professional image.

After 23 years in the Navy I do have a few of them including an artistic rendition of my wife's name on my chest.  Only have one that shows if I wear a short sleve shirt but it is not offensive in any way.  Got it in Hong Kong when I was 18.

Never had a tatoo but I have a brand from my college days on my back. Luckily, it's starting to fade though its significance has brought in business.

Yes, I have a tattoo. It's small and usually is hidden by clothing, though I think it's beautiful and sometimes choose to let it show. People are usually surprised to find out I have one...I guess I don't seem like "the type". And the lesson is, don't judge a book by its cover :-)

I actually tend to like tattoos on other people, and am not against them at all, but I have never, not even once, had any desire to get one myself.  So I have none. My mom, however, has her eyeliner tattooed on her.  So do many of her friends :-)  -Kasey

Never,  I guess it seems to permanent.  I think if I were in the military I might get one to honor my branch of the service, it seems so traditional.

I don't have one, though I could see it would happen.  But...it would surely be very well concealed, and even if I was walking around w/ droopy pants, it wouldn't be visible.  Though I'm not sure the tattoo would be my professoinal concern if I was in droopy pants mode.
