Planning on Moving to Oregon with your horse?  Here are steps to ensure your move is hassle-free:

  • Contact the Oregon State Veterinary office to get the most-up-to-date requirements for brining horses into  the State.  Currently, a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health certificate) is required.  But, if your horse does not have the necessary vaccines, you may need to have these administered months before transport.  So, it is best to find out early.
  • Request an Equine Relocation Package if you plan on purchasing a home.
  • If the property you are buying does not have a suitable barn or safe fencing, you may need to board your horses until the work can be completed.  Email me for a list of boarding faciltiies.
  • Pack enough hay and feed for at least 1-2 weeks so that you can blend it in with the new local hay you will be feeding in Oregon.  You can read additional tips about moving day.
  • Have question?  Need to know where the nearest riding trails are?  Or the closest feed store?  Just ask.  I may not know the answer, but I can likely find the source that will!

Catherine, this is a great idea and something that we don't think about in the Lafayette area.  I can only imagine how beautiful the country is out in the Willamette Valley, and how fun that has to be to ride horses out there!

I need to live next to someone who has horses where I can ride them, then turn them back in for maintenance :-) Horses are a lot of work!

Catherine, in the aftermath of concerns over the recent diseases that were being transmitted across statelines, it's good to have this information reiterated for horse people.

Horses are a lot of work, but the emotional payoff sure is wonderful!

Catherine,

These are all great tips for moving with horses.  The most important is to  make sure the necessary health papers are together especially when crossing state lines.
