Do you write your own blog posts? Tell me what you think. :)

Real Estate Agent with Resource Network, LLC SFR, AHWD, ACRE, SMAR Board Director
How do you feel about other's writing your blogs. Last week at the Rain Camp Webinar I believe I heard Ben correctly. I think he advocated he didn't have time to write his own AR blog and had someone write it for him. I could have misunderstood him since my computer was going in and out during his time speaking.
However, I did want to ask how you feel about that.  Not about Ben but about other's writing your blog!!
And, please, I would like to hear from the general public, too.  I'd like to have your comments, as well.
Thanks so much, Gail
There are several things I do myself. And, not necessarily because I thought of it first. I've had a few great mentors along the way in all my careers.
1. The most important thing to me where my clients/customers are concerned: I answer my own phone and I am the only person who speaks with my clients via phone.
2. I write my own blogs. They are my thoughts and I should write them! Certainly, if I had an assistant, I might allow him or her to post the blog, do it with colorful flair but they would be my words!
How do you feel about having a "hired hand" write your blog posts? Curious as to how you feel.

In general, yes, I believe you should write you own blog has to be your voice and your knowledge if you are using them to connect.

Now for Ben, most of his are just voice is needed and I think it's okay to have someone else do them, esp given the mass he does.  I think he is doing this for some of the local posts, too.

I do, however, believe that the listings will be stronger and more passionate if the listing agent does them and that person gives more perspective.

Oh, and I write all my posts.  I can't imagine someone else doing it for me.    Suggested.

I heard the same thing you did. To each his own. I've heard that suggestion before--hire a writing student from the local Uni to write blogs for five bucks a blog post. Not my style at all.

He also outsources his virtual assistant work. Listening to him that day, I decided I would not do that when the time comes (soon!) I would look for some U.S. stay-at-home or homeschooling moms who need a small income and flexible work. I can train people pretty quickly to do computer data entry, I believe. He is free to do what he wants, of course. I just know too many families struggling to make ends meet right here in my neighborhood to send work out of our borders.

I consider myself a 'high-touch' agent. Lots of communication and contact with my clients. I'm happy with that....which leads me to believe I'll be writing my own blogs for a long while yet.

Hi Gail, great topic! Yes, I write my own BUT I have a VA that edits, its still all my own work though. When I write, I just write what I am thinking and it needs to be edited. As to what do I feel about a "hired hand", I don't really think its a big deal to throw a bought post in once and awhile, if you can find someone that their post will blend with yours, more power to you! Ill be curious to see what others have to say...

Thank you, Debbie.  :) I haven't read all his stuff, I did not know he only posts listings. Thx for your thoughts.

Deb, I agaree with you.  I agee with you Deb.  I want to pay people here.  I make good money here and want to share it here!  I was appauled, if you want to know the truth that he searches for people in Asia and pays them $6.00/hour.  It's similarly why I have a hard time purchasing Temptations dishes on QVC made in China, although, I have purchased a few.  They have to be paying slave wages there.  It doesn't matter if their economy is different.  $20.00 US Dollars for intricate, hand painted items that someone probably slaved over for 1/2 - one day, minimum would mean they were paid peanuts.  I do believe in buying "Made in US".  Thank you, Deb for stopping by. :) Gail

Gail...I attended as well and truly I do not like the idea. I think part of what draws some clients in is getting to know us personally. Maybe having someone put together maket reports or make the charts would be good....I could use help with that! But overall it is not for me. I also was not too thrilled about the use of an overseas VA.

Christine, I guess that's the point I was trying to make, so I thank you.  It's our personalities that come through and how do they come through if you have a ghost writer?  I suppose that's possible if you edit and approve the content to a point.  Perhaps, if you hire someone to post your blogs, there should be a line at the bottom, content edited by poster?!!  I don't know.  All I know is this takes a lot of work and hats off to those who are really good at it, get their points across, blog eloquently and do it all in a short time. :)  I spend hours here when I come and I really need to perhaps template my person blogs (perhaps) so after I do my reading and I can perhaps map out my post ideas for the week.  I'm a fy by the seat of my paints kind of person and perhaps a VA in the blogging department might reel me in a bit!  :)  Just still not sure if I'm still on the fence but I do know I looked forward to seeing what others felt.  That's why I did not make this a public post.

I also received many posts that have not show-up here.  Perhaps the authors have deleted them. Odd.  Howver, they seemed to be in support of one writing their own blogs.

I didn't do this to raise any controversy or to say, 'how does a person do this", I was just wondering how all of us feel about penning your own blogs.  There are two sides to every coin and I do believe there may be reasons you might want someone to pen your blogs.  As in the case of positing listings, yes it could be just that.  You post the listings with no editorials.  Probably not much harm in that.  Not sure yet.  Will wait to see more comments.

Thank you Valerie.  :)

I will tell you a story.  I contact many agents here.  Margaret Rome gave me that idea.  I was wondering about a blog post and wanted more info and Margaret said, "pick-up the phone and call".  I started with an agent from Wrightsville, and that was so neat.  That was my first phone call with Tish and Cinnamon.  If you know them, they need no introduction!  I was actually apprehensive to call Tish, nervous and not knowing what to expect. However, I had the best time, and they are both amazing people.  A short while later I received a phone call from a Glen Head Agent, Ellen, and she was as delightful as her blog posts.  Easy to see how we form friendships here in the Rain.

However, in other cases, when I've called, and it's only happened a few times, I can tell you the personalities on the blog posts versus the live phone conversations were not the same!  I could tell in an instant that the person I was talking to did not pen their own blog posts.  After hearing Ben, I'm not sure if this is a common practice or not but I don't call upon those that I don't have a rapport with and feel as if their message here is the same as they blog (penned by them or not).  This is a matter of trust.  If I'm going to refer a friend or relative to an agent who I've come to know here, I want to know that, that person is the same person I've come to know through their blogs!! :)

Thank heavens for friendships forged. :)

Gail--First,  I write all my own material mistakes and all.  Sometimes I catch a misspelled word or grammar 'faux pa'  (more misspelled words) myself.  Second, I can understand using VA to post listings, market reports and edit your material.  Third, I will write posts in 'draft' before a long vacation and have VA post my own material at pre-scheduled times.

That being said a blog like anything else is a mirror for the author.  What is your goal?  Throw the material out there and hope a cyber viewer is lured in?  Some of the listings posted here are just 'posted.'  Others are presented with flair and 'tender loving care' by a listing agent who really has a stake in marketing the property.  Now I am sure that you could find a starving journalist who has that flair, but probably not.

Market reports:  we have seen some that are prize winning specimens of creativity and others that just present the numbers, but the ones that capture my attention are the ones the offer the bloggers personal input on their local market.  Isn't that what the consumer wants to hear?  At least I want that and these are the market reports that I will comment on. (Unless I am just leaving that blogger a generic message--not often, but honest)

Draft mode:  Great option for long weekend or week-long or longer vacations.

  • Put a few posts in 'draft' mode
  • Virtual assistant can submit your material according to your prearranged schedule
  • Works for holiday time, too

Thank you, Mary for clarifying as Deb did in one of the first posts.  If it's a post with just the facts, I probably would agree: no harm, no foul!  :)  Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts.

Yes, Ellen, and I'm glad you are back. :)

I agree, Ann.  Me, too.  Who in the world could get in my head, anyway.  LOL

Yup, I thought of you and that very idea as I was "rambling" on, Margaret!! :)

Gail, I write my own blog takes time some more than others.  I had an agent come up to me after our board meeting and tell me how much she enjoys reading my blog...that is a great feeling!!!

Gail, I'm with you on this.  I write my own at this point.  I could see letting someone add pics, the signatures, and that kind of comments.   Market stats and listings may be ok but in order to put my name to posts, I'm afraid I'd still want to proof!
