Rock Creek Park's Pierce Mill
Pierce Mill in Rock Creek Park
Washington, DC real estate professional and ActiveRain blogger Patricia Kennedy frequently shares information on local landmarks. In this post, we have a preview photograph of Pierce Mill in Rock Creek Park as it undergoes renovation.

When I first moved to Washington back in the 1970's one of my neighbors suggested that we take a hike to Rock Creek Park's Pierce Mill. It is the last of eight mills build along Rock Creek in the 1800's. By 1980, it was still operating, and they actually sold flour that they made on the site.
The mill has been closed for several years, and is currently undergoing some major renovations (yes, your stimulus money at work).
In 1820, Isaac Pierce opened the mill, which used state of the art technology for the time. It operated as a mill until the early 20th century, when it was used as a tea room.
Then in the 1930's, it was restored to a mill using WPA funds, and until sometime in the 1990's it was a functional mill.
The mill is once again undergoing major renovations. They are trying to restore the site to what it looked like in 1820, taking out the parking lot behind the building.
Almost every day, I drive past this lovely old landmark on the way to and from appointments. And on Friday, *I pulled the car over, got out and took some photos.
Pierce Mill is located near the corner of Tilden Road and Beach Drive. If you drive, there are two parking lots that are nearby.
And keep in mind that the renovations are not yet complete, so you probably will not be able to see the interior of the beautiful old building.
