Siblings, Rotten, Rotten-ROTTEN!

Growing up in Alaska with two brothers and two sisters in was interesting to say the least. We all got along (our parents would not have it any other way) and we went on adventures as a family. We went snow machining like ducks in a row, camping, fishing, going to the flight line on Elmendorf AFB (now Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson or JBER for short) to watch the planes, whatever it was, we were together.

One memory that sneaks up on me this time of year is the smell of fall. It is a decay smell to me, wet leaves, dying grasses etc. Some people like the smell and others do not. Larry and I are on both sides of the fence on this one, I do not like the smell, he does because it means fall to him.

The reason I do not like it is because of the title of this story. Siblings, Rotten, Rotten-ROTTEN! You see, my siblings told me when I was an impressionable young kid (maybe 6 years old) that the smell was a WET BEAR in the woods. They followed up with anytime you smell that smell, the bear is close and can smell you too. Then something like it is close enough to attack and eat you...you know, the fun stuff siblings say and do to each other.

To this day, I still have that millisecond response to the smell and then I think 'siblings, Rotten, Rotten-ROTTEN!'

For those of you new to Alaska or just visiting our area in the fall, the smell is probably just the smell of fall and not a wet bear lying in wait to attack. Thank you John, Don, JoAnne and KC for the blog idea, you are all ROTTEN!

The pics above were from our family reunion in 2011. We were recreating the family pic from 36 years prior as a silly surprise for my folks. My family is nuts (in a good, silly, mischievous, fun, goofy-and a bunch more adjectives-way)! Can you see from the pics why I say Siblings, Rotten, Rotten-ROTTEN?

If you are new to Alaska or just visiting, we are available to help with the purchase of your new home. If you are selling because you too do not like the smell of fall, we are also here for you!

If you are not moving here but vacationing we also have some really cute Alaskan themed, modern and fully furnished vacation rentals if you simply just want to check out our beautiful state (and tease family members with the 'wet bear' story).

Oh man Erica, Larry went out last night (was skunked) and his brother is out on the Hall Road right now hunting. How did your husband and his buddies do?

Our niece (age 15) just got a huge caribou with her bow a few weeks ago. I am not a hunter (at all) but I can kill a mean paper target!

If they need anything while they are here, just give us a call.

Great story, and do believe fall means different things to different people.   I very much enjoy a manicured lawn, and fall means all 11 trees leaves are ALL OVER.    The blower is very busy this time of year!    Cute story, and DO believe those siblings were mean!

Thank you Joan, they also told a new neighbor that every time a moose twitches its ears it means it is going to attack. If you have ever seen a moose, they twitch their ears all the time because of mosquitoes etc! Poor guy-I don't know how much exercise he got running through the woods!

Our parents have a wicked sense of humor too though-they would sneak out of the house when we were all watching a scary movie and either A) sport a costume and walk by a window or B) scrape the window with a stick. We came to expect it though! That is probably why we are all still here-we had to survive to be able to 'get' the next unsuspecting sibling with a prank.

I'm one that loves the smell of fall.  Then again, no one told me it was a wet bear coming to eat me either.

No kidding Chris Ann! The whole 'wet bear' Thing kind of ruined it a bit.

Hi there Michael, many thanks! We had fun (if you couldn't tell from the pictures). Mum and pop had no idea what we were up to and the only sibling that lives out of state (Don) was able to bring his family up for the reunion. We went right back to old times.

Jacquie,

I love your story!  Siblings are rotten or maybe I should say older siblings are rotten!  I was 2nd oldest of our 4 children family and I was not that nice to my little sister at times (notice I didn't say all the time - sometimes I was pretty darn nice!).  Love the pics of you guys and I'm with Larry in that I love the smell of fall!

Hey there DeeDee, my sister JoAnne (the blonde one) had a favorite phrase for me. 'There is another hour of therapy for when you are older.' HA! She is such a hoot and we have a blast together.

I should have Larry write a story of him and his brothers. I thought mine were rotten but Larry has some stories also (he was the instigator oldest, so I doubt he will give up his stories though).

Hi there Laura, thank you! It doesn't have much to do with real estate unless you take into consideration of the different personalities that we are used to dealing with, negotiation skills (4 siblings!) etc. ha!

The family is pretty silly and most folks don't know what to do with us when we get together.

Thank you Sharon, these were a few of the 'facebook approved' pics. You should see some of the rest of the photos! We can all do 'faces' and it was hilarious going through the pics where we all looked normal. That was a treasure hunt!

Hi there Allen, your wife was here in the sunny season-my favorite time of year here. Long days, not much in the way of darkness and great fishing! If you need any tips on what to do while you are here next year just let us know. I am sure your friend will help but we are here for you too. :)

Hi there Roy, absolutely! Thank you for taking a look at the silly pics of the silly family.  :)

We have some pretty fall photos from our Denali trip on here but I am afraid the leaves will not be here much longer. Soon, we will be back to browns and white (and the blue of the glaciers).

The pic on the left is up north of Talkeetna (Denali Highway) and the snappys are from earlier this summer.
