Fotos on the Fly: Camouflage in nature…

Today I was reminded that nature sometimes clothes it creatures in the most remarkable ways.  I was at the Dog Park at Kingsland Point Park and was admittedly on poop patrol – cleaning up after my dogs.  While I was looking in the brown leaves on the ground…one of the leaves suddenly started hopping along the ground.   There it was ….. a tiny frog….so well camouflaged that I would never have seen it if I hadn’t been really focused on the ground.   I only had my phone camera – but here it is…can you even see my little amphibian friend?

We have such wonderful nature trails and parks and preserves in Westchester.  Get out there and explore the rich nature that Westchester has to offer us all.

Ruthmarie:

Nature is so awesome.  The frog is hard to find at first glance. The picture and the frog are cool.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ruthmarie, Poop Control huh? LMAO. They should assign badges that say you on patrol so people know better than to offer a hand for a shake. Yewwwwwww. :-) Been there done that but I must say, you did a great job capturing that amphibian. When they were picking colors, i think this frog and his kin couldn't decide on one color so they took a whole bunch, :-). A fun post!

Hi Larry - You really have to know its there to see it.  It really was quite remarkable.

Hi Jon - Wish I had my best camera with a good lens on it.  But the car was too far away - He would have been gone.  So I contented myself with my iPhone camera.

Hi Eric - The only way I can see them in the snow is when I notice a snow drift moving.  Sometimes their eyes and noses give it away.  But They really are camouflaged as well.

Hi Evelyn - Glad you liked it.  I was afraid that people would think I was giving them a photo of dead leaves!

QuickFreeMLS - Glad you liked it!

Hi Wiliam - Yes, poop patrol - what can I tell you?  WHy else would I be looking intently at dead leaves?  If he hadn't moved, I never would have seen him. Glad you thought it was fun.  I did too.

Yes, that guy is well camouflaged, esp for fall  Nature is amazing. BTW, it might be a toad, rather than a frog

Good thing you didn't scoop up the little fella in your poop bag. Love frogs and toads - and they are masters of disguise. :)

Hi Debbie - I think you're right about him being a toad.  Still cute...

Hi Debb - I don't think he'd let me...He was pretty nimble.  But he froze so he could blend in...allowing me to take his pic..

Thanks Allen - it wasn't easy to get - but he stood still for it.

Hi Tatyana - No he wasn't easy to see at all --- I was about to scoop him up as poop...but poop doesn't move!

Hi Ruthmarie,

That is a great photo. I think this is the way mother nature protects her young with camouflage. I just came across a praying mantis the other day. Luckily it stayed while I went to get my camera.kristinhamiltonblog.com

Wow Kristen - He certainly was well hidden as well.  Amazing isn't it?  I was so annoyed that I didn't have my good camera with me - but the cell phone worked better than I had expected it would.  Fortunatley my little friend put up with having the camera close to him.   I had to really get close to capture him at all.  Any further away and no one would have been able to see it.

Hi Allen - You have to catch them in the act of camouflage.

Hi Marge - The little ones are hard to find....I never would have seen this guy if I hadn't been looking for something else!
