Flashback to the Past: A Telephone Booth

Once upon a time, there was no such thing as a cell phone.

Telephone Booth

People that just HAD to stay connected wore pagers.

Most people were content with an answering machine at home.

If someone had an answering machine; that meant that they did not have a party line.

If someone needed to place a call, they used a phone in a telephone booth.

Just this last weekend, I found an old telephone booth in a museum.  The phone was so old that the hand set and mouth piece were separate.

Can you imagine conducting real estate business without a cell phone?

Old Train Depot in Cripple Creek (Cripple Creek District Museum)

I stumbled across this old telephone booth at the Cripple Creek District museum in Cripple Creek, Colorado.  The Cripple Creek/Victor District was the home to over 500 gold mines at one time.  Cripple Creek is about an hour away from Colorado Springs.

I traveled the world and only called home once every 6 weeks or so. I would go nuts these days to be so "Unconnected"

So true - I can even imagine doing real estate without the internet. I often remember back to when cordless phones were the 'new' thing!

Ahhh yes, those good old days!  I remember them well and than graduated from the phone booth to the "bag phone" to tote around with you.

Now I am really feeling dated, phone booths, another lost artifact in our times, the convenience of a cell phone is a wonderful gift and a huge intrusion into our privacy.

Sondra, I haven't seen a phone booth in years. I almost forgot about them until you showed this picture of one from your Cripple Creek Museum. I am not sure what I would do without my cell phone.

It's amazing Sondra in our lifetime the phone booth has basically gone extinct and is a museum piece now with the building out of cell towers and a cellular network, but technology at certain points is disrupting. Think of that slide rule - handheld calculator day in time. Poof, one day all the slide rules disappeared. You are finding some very cool places in your travels.

Sondra - No, I can't imagine conducting any business without a cell phone, but once upon a time we did! Do you remember when we had to get up to change the channel on the TV - those where some tough times - lol. Cut photo of you in the phone booth!

Sondra, All we have our cell phones.  We don't even have a house phone anymore.  I can imagine doing real estate without a cell phone and computer!  Talk about the Dark ages!

Tony, great point, I forgot that we don't have house phones anymore.  Well, my 90 year old grandmother still does.

Kritine, lol... those were tough times having to get up and change the channel on the T.V.  Plus, there were maybe 13 channels.

Gary, I honestly don't remember a slide rule.  I do remember a type writer.

Jerry, I agree with you.  I would be lost without the phone.

Mary, I have to agree with you.  Sometimes, I hate feeling like I should be able to answer my phone or a text all of the time.

Sue....I forgot about those huge bag phones. I always thought they were a status symbol of someone that was really important.

Laura, I was thinking the same thing. lol

Julie, I agree. The internet is probably even more imporant than the cell phone.

Ellie, being that unconnected now days is almost unimaginable in the United States.

Thank you to all for your comments.

Sondra, you're making me feel old here..... thanks (I think). Seriously, they used to have slide rule competitions. See how fast you could multiply or get a square root on the the thing using the different scales. We flew to the moon with slide rules. Nerdy engineers ALWAYS had slide rules in the pre-calculator days. The typewriter was another example going away after the computer word processor-printer came along. For your museum self here is what a slide rule looks like: (the slang for them was slip sitcks)

Slide Rule

Sondra,

Nice post. Phone booths have disappeared as well as the pay phones that used to be in them. :)

Gary,

This is as close to a slide rule as some people will ever get - gone but not forgotten. :)
