In a recent trade publication I read the results of a survey.
U.S. citizens were asked: If they could chose ONE debt to eliminate which one would it be. An overwhelming percentage said they'd eliminate their mortgage.
Well, "duh"! Did they really need to conduct a survey to find that out? For most Americans, the mortgage is the largest debt they owe. What did you expect them to say... that they wanted to eliminate that $14.97 they owe to the dry-cleaner down the street. C'mon!?
After mortgage debt, the survey said 19 percent would erase their credit card debt. (okay, I can see that).
The next 8 percent said they'd remove student loan debt (clearly these are younger folk who don't yet have a mortgage).
And interestingly enough... those surveyed said that if they had no mortgage payment to pay each month, 54% would use the money to make home improvements, while 25% said they would buy a car.
